A833 Questions on Wear
« on: December 06, 2015 - 10:47:39 PM »
In and earlier thread I posted about swapping to a 4 speed from my 727. I have a line on a 247 close ratio 833 that I might be able to purchase cheap.  What I'm looking for is how to tell if the trans is worn or other problems I can look for with the side cover off. Also can you tell much just by shifting it to see if it is smooth? Maybe someone has some pics of one with problems so I have something to compare it with? This could save me some big bucks on my conversion if it's a good trans.  Thanks

Seeing as they are doing a rebuild , if parts look like this should be ok.

Spinning the shafts should be smooth, no chips in gears,

From Hemmings article below:Take the side cover off the unit you have found and check the play on the countershaft carefully; this is a good indication of how good a unit you have located. Most rebuilders would recommend that you install a bushing on the countershaft if any repairs need to be made. Aftermarket four-speed conversion humps for Chrysler cars are available for about $140 to help you complete this changeover.

front input shaft will always have a little play so not to worry if you feel it.

It's a 23 spline, if it would have been a 18 I would have already have bought it and took my chances for the money.  :grinyes:

side to side is OK , end play should be zero
look for chipped teeth on the gears where the syncro collars lock on to the gears
check for wear on the shift forks too
It should shift smoothly when the input shaft is being rotated but not when it it is not rotated
Check for end play on the counter shaft too there should be very little play there .

Well I went and looked at the trans tonight and it looked really good. I checked the input shaft, there is no end play in and out but it has about 3/32 side to side play at the very tip. I checked all the gears and synchronizers for wear and I can't see any at all whatsoever. Turning the input shaft while shifting it is smooth as silk. What is nice is it still has the Hurst shifter mechanism (no wear here either) as well as the operating lever set just no linkage rods. I think I stole it for $300 since just the shifter mechanism alone from Brewers is $200 and the operating levers are another $57 also I won't have to pay the high shipping costs on the trans. I pretty happy that I may be able to do my 4 speed conversion for maybe half price at this rate.  :ylsuper:

Nice job! 3/32 input shaft play is normal. Trans install is easy. I would try  it out as is and tHen pull it if it has an issue! Good luck!
