Caltrac's fitment question
« on: December 07, 2015 - 04:45:39 AM »
So, team, I have a set of Dr Diff 1'' spring relocation hangers on a b Body diff housing in my 73 Cuda, has anyone fitted Caltracs or similar onto factory style offset hangers and so on, looks to be a big task to me.

The way Caltracs are setup I don't think you could use offset hangers, I guess you could try but it would be a PITA.

They didn't help Chryco? I was going to order a set for my car and a friend's car. Good to know.

Thanks guys, I was thinking fitment would be a pita for sure, Im going to add another leaf to my spring pack to take them to 5 1/2 leaves, might just see how they go and take it from there.

we installed them on a 440 duster it ran 11.8 with a 1.7 60 ' before we installed the caltracs & it ran 11.8 with a 1.7 60' after the Caltracs even after numerous adjustments

Since Cal-tracs mount in the spring eye/hanger and under the housing u-bolts, I don't see where fitting them on an inboard set up would be any different than a stock set up.

Thanks guys, I've determined fitment won't be an issue, I now have to work through all the various options pro's and cons, caltracs, clamps, extra leafs, bolt on front segments only, snubbers and on and on

Based on this I take it you have the original 318 4/5 leaf pack with 40 years of use on them. Nearly anything will be a step up. How are you using the car, what type of power are you pushing and what wheel and tire combo is on it?

Cal-Trac's can't be that bad, just about every NHRA stock eliminator car and a lot of bracket cars use them, but you do need the hold package for them to work.

For the street make a custom pair of leaf springs and a snubber will work well.

It's a steet cruiser, original 340 springs that are actually in very good order and have been fully rebuilt. Adding an extra leaf is no issue. Power will be a 600hp 408 (flywheel). Through a 727. The Dana is from a truck donor so no snubber mount. Yes I could screw one to the floor but I don't want to, I can make a snubber bracket for the D60 as an option.

Greg ,

If you use your 340 springs, clamp the hell out of the front segments maybe 5 or 6 clamps both sides..

I use a B-Body housing and B-body springs that I modified from a six pac car..

Worked pretty good for me

60 ft were  1.54 to 1.56 avg in a 3680 lb 340 NHRA Stocker Cuda wth a auto transmission back in the 80's.
