new and overwhelmed
« on: December 09, 2015 - 06:28:53 AM »
Hey all! I'm a girl who likes to look at classic muscle cars but knows little about them. when i was young, my dad had a '67 barracuda fastback that he'd drag race at the local strip on sundays. he loved cars...especially that one. long story really short: he bought a project car (as 67 notchback) to work on with my sister. his health failed quickly and the car sat in the yard. my sister and i thought we'd still fix the car...he left it to us in his will. life happens and over the years, i've had a couple days of help from my brother, but not enough to really get anywhere. he left me with a disassembled hulk of a project. i have a friend who has started helping me. and now he is getting ready to move to florida.
this project just gets more overwhelming as these little things happen. but that's okay! i'm still finishing this if it kills me (and, let's be honest...it just might!)
but that's why i'm here...i'm really hoping i can count on the vast knowledge that is, no doubt, contained in these pages!
where i'm at now: car had been sitting on flats for 3 or so years; towed to my sisters house, then mine; it's been up on jacks for the past 3 years. my friend says it's definitely not a lost cause, so that gives me hope. I'm in the process of sanding rust off the undercarriage, so that i can apply POR-15. it's in a carport (tight fit), so the seats are still in it for now. we're on the east coast, where winter is about to hit (though it's been rather warm lately), so working outside is about to come to an end. back axle is in the shed; new leaf springs (bought by dad when he was still alive) are in the trunk; original carb, manifold, and headers are in the basement.
i imagine i'll just be gathering info over the winter months, in prep for spring.
happy to be here and hope not to become a pain! :)

welcome aboard !!

you will find lots of information here, and do not hesitate to ask questions !! I hope that all little parts are bagged and tagged and if not please do as it will save you time and money.

for your undercarriage, please check your car is on jackstands and high enough you can fit under and work safely; if your carport is tight, check on youtube, some guys made wooden parts to roll your car and be able to stand up and work easy.

hope this helps and sory for my english, not my mother tongue !!

already great info and help!
what i have taken off is contained and safe...though i haven't gotten into any nitty gritty bits yet.
the unfortunate thing is that the car/carport are on the flatest part of my driveway...at the top of a hill. rolling out is not an option, so i'm trying to figure a way to remove the tarp this spring...
thanks for the warm welcome and help.

Welcome from CO!  This is the best site for help and knowledge on restoring your car!  A lot of great experience here.

Great story about your dad, and I really hope you get this car on the road.  However, I would do a reality check and truly assess your skills, how much time you have to devote to this BIG project, your budget and ultimate goal of when you want to be driving this car.  What may be not hard for some is impossible for others (skills, budget, and time).  Obviously you do not have a large heated shop, so the next 3-4 months are pretty much dead time that repeats annually.  What are you skills for body work, welding, mechanical, interior, electrical?  What tools do you own to do this project?  On top of all that, what all parts and pieces do you have that will go back on the car or that you need to find and buy?

Time flies by, and depending on if you have a family and other commitments your time may be limited and you are missing out on drive time.  Doing a project like this is not impossible, but does take a serious commitment to finish.

Post more pics and everyone here will be more than happy to help with a true assessment of your project.

Welcome!

Glad to see one picture posted up!  Can't wait to see some more!

Remember, driving and enjoying the car is entirely different from creating a trailer queen car that is perfect.
Sometimes just getting it running and out on the road makes a huge difference on actually finishing the car.
Of course I have little idea of how far your car is apart or what it needs.

This site is awesome!  I have received so much help from members here.  I'm sure you will find a home here.

Welcome from California!  you came to the right place. I too am fairly new here and the help many have given is just incredible! Someday I hope I can give back.
Post as many pictures as you can. You know the saying a picture is worth a thousand words.
The guys here will spot things in those pictures that you would never think of.
What is your plan and budget? This helps others give advice on how and what to repair.
Now this is just me, I am of the camp that would like to get a car on the road soon if possible, only after it is made safe with brakes and  suspension etc...By doing this you can drive and enjoy it. Doing upgrades as time permits.
 Good luck!

as said above, how far are you from having a running and driving car ?  if it is only brakes and suspension work, it can be done at home with few tools !! sometimes it could be easier to farm out brake work to a ppro shop as it is safety first here !! that's what i usually do with my projects.
if it can be made running and driving easily, it would be great for motivation to work on small jobs once at a time !!

always remember, mechanical work is easier that body work !!

post picts of the condition of your cuda, we all are pleased to help !!

YouTube is a great source for basic stuff. When the front hubs went on my Silverado I went to the site and there were several how-to videos that helped immensely. One piece of advice: when you tackle a project (brakes, suspension, whatever) go over the steps in your head as best you can before you get started - it sometimes helps me resolve issues before I start taking things apart.
