´72 Cuda in Sweden.
« on: December 09, 2015 - 02:36:36 PM »
Hi all Mopar fans, Mr. Cuda here. I have, through the years, been snooping around this site and always learning something new, so it's time I introduce myself and my car. I have a Cuda-72. 340, 727 auto. 8 ¾ and Sure-Grip with 3:23. A / C car. The color is Sherwood Green Metallic with green V1F vinyl roof, as well as green exterior and interior trim.
The car was exported to Sweden in ’76 and I bought it in ’78. A couple years ago I tracked down the American vendor, Larry & Wysox, Pa, who told me the following story:
“Sorry to take so long to research this car.  We traded it in on a pickup truck.  It was sold new by Dave Snell Chrysler-Plymouth in Wysox, Pa--They are out of business now.  The party that traded it in was:  Donald Irvine--RR2, Towanda Pa 18848.  As far as I know Donny still resides at that address but I don't have a box number.  I took the car to an auction in Syracuse, NY, and sold it to a wholesaler in the Bronx section of New York City.  I do not have their name. Hope this helps—Larry--”
In the 80's the car was painted red with black vinyl roof. The last 4 years, my car has undergone a complete restoration to original condition, GF7 green, everything from the body to seat upholstery, to new headliner and V1F vinyl roof, right spare wheel, original radio and so on.
There are a few questions that I need your help with. When I bought the car, the grill was body color green and headlight bezels full chrome, are these a options or what?
The engine is a ’70, and here I also need some help from you Mopar experts. When I took the engine apart and looked at the cam I didn’t find any marks on it, and when I measured it, I got to 276/284, 444/453 cam; I think this belongs to a 340 with manual gearbox (is that right)? My 340 has 10.5 pistons and modified X-heads, T-Q. My question is if this is a suitable cam or if I should switch to an original 268/276 429/444. Feel free to explain what each does differently for the engine.

On the cam? I would test drive looking at; Does it pull hard from a "Dead" or slow rolling start, Shifting into 2nd holding, a "Solid" ever gaining RPM roar?... Leave it in there and tell everybody it's stock.

Welcome to the site from  :canada:  Personally, I'd leave the slightly bigger cam in it.

Welcome from New Jersey.  Really nice looking Cuda.
In the 1970's - 1980's I owned a number of RT Challengers (not at the same time)
One of my former cars, a 1970 RT Special Edition in rally red, 440 engine with an automatic, air and power windows was exported to Sweden shortly after I sold it.  Wish I still had that car!
Anyway, I personally like the small block 340 cars.  The 70 engine you have is 10.5 compression with a forged crank and should handle the slightly larger cam shaft.  The specs on your cam look similar to the 1968 340-4 speed cars.  In 1968 they had a slightly larger cam only in the stick shift cars when compared to cars with automatic transmissions.  The real test is at what RPM does the engine start to pull strong?  If the car is sluggish off the line with the slightly higher duration cam, you could change to a lower gear ratio in the 8 3/4 rear.  The 3:23 gears could be a little mild for the slightly hotter cam shaft.  Many small block 340's came with 3:55 gears or lower which would help it pull stronger at a lower speed by increasing RPM's at a quicker rate.  The e-body Challenger is heavier then say an A body Duster and may really need just the slightly lower gear set (3:55) because of the added weight.  Just a thought.  The small block 340's are fun to drive and handle better then big block cars.  Wish you the best with a really nice car!

Welcome to the club.  I agree with a higher gear on the 340.  I had a '70 Swinger 340 once 4 speed factory 3.91 car...rare.  It had T/A heads, Erson 284 duration cam, headers, electronic ignition conversion, Eddy carb stock intake .030 over Keith Black Hypereutectic pistons... car ran REALLY good, I like the 3.91 gear in a 340, to me it's perfect and I have had 340 cars with 2.91, 3.23, 3.55, and 3.91's.  My father's Demon has a 3.55 sure grip, and my old Duster 340 had that, I like just a little bit more.

For the record, my buddy had a '72 LT-1 vette with 11:1 pistons when I had the Dart.  My car pulled more than his.  340's are one of the best small blocks ever in my opinion.
