Northerners storing rides for the winter
« on: December 10, 2015 - 07:26:24 PM »
Hi this will be my first winter storing my  70 challenger I used  stabil and carb defender I am using turbo blue racing fuel  ( engine was rebuilt ) I was told by the engine builder to pour some carb defender down each carb when storing . They also rebuilt the six pack . Do you guys just park the rides or do you periodically start them and run up to operating temp . Not sure what is best ?
What do you folks do ?

I put stabil in the tank, run the car for a bit so it gets to the float bowls.

I may put the car up on stands for the winter and fire it up 2 or 3 time over the long  :canada: winter.

Of course I may also pull things apart and be unable to start it until the spring.

I have never had any real problems either way.

I use ethanol free gas , fuel stabilizer ( although I haven't added any yet) and a full tank of fuel. I do start it up now and then when it gets above freezing just to keep the "juices flowing" if you will. I keep a "battery tender" on all winter too.
Don't forget antifreeze if you had just water in it.

You know what I do? Nothing. I pull the car in the warehouse, which is not heated, and into one of those car storage envelopes. I toss about a dozen anti moisture bags under the car and take the battery out and bring it home. Zip it up and its good night until April. I've been doing it that way for 15 years and it always starts up when I take it out and I've never had any other problems.

I just keep driving. But in short, do you really think your carbs would gum up and screw up if you parked the car for 4 5 6 months or the tank rot?  Nope.  where ever humidity and bare steel  meet is the oh no zone.....rust.

I do the same. Then park it and disconnect the battery. Normally don't start it until spring. However.........if this warm weather keeps up it's coming back out.  :burnout:

"if this warm weather keeps up it's coming back out. "- Those Mitchell boys! Remember when you'd see an Ebody with snows on in the middle of winter in a snow storm Murray? I do, but then the Bruce County boys always dealt with it that way. Poor Perth County laddies dealing with all that nasty, cold white stuff! LOL  :stirpot:  :poopoke:

I top my tank with a mixture of pump gas, avgas, and stabil or sea foam. I change the oil.  I pump the tires up to 45 psi to prevent flat spotting. Then I put the sun visors down and toss dryer sheets around in the interior and under the hood to combat mice.  If I was more ambitious I'd stuff steel wool in my exhaust tips as I've heard mice like traveling up the exhaust system to take up residence in the engine. Then I put a car cover on and forget about it until spring.
In the past when I had a repro Mopar battery, I'd store it in my house on a block of wood in my basement. I've given up on those for the time being and just disconnect the Walmart batteries I use now.  The wal mart battery in my vert is so old I've lost track of it's age, somewhere between 10 and 15 years old and as of October, still good!!!
I've been doing this for years and no problems.  Previously I'd had a few mouse issues with storing cars, chewed up upholstery foam and holes in the headliner above the visor.
I hate mice!  I park my DD outside and this year I found some evidence of mice under the hood.  Today my check engine light went on in my 2014 car.  I'm fearing mice chewed up some wiring and whatever's wrong won't be covered under warranty.  I'll find out next week.
IMO, mice are the biggest danger to a stored car.

As a side note...FYI:

Batteries no longer have to be put on something between the cement like a piece of wood or rubber.

That was done in the old days when they were made out of a Bakelite material.
The consensus then was they would dissipate their charge going straight to ground when exposed sitting direct on cement.

It's now safe to put a battery direct on cement with the plastics they use today.

Topcat, do I recall correctly that you work for Interstate?

LOL  you are right about the mice in the tailpipe.  I stored my partners cuda in my shop since hurricane katrina,  I started it up after a year or so and shot a mouse out of the left exhaust tip. It hit the shop wall. DOA :smilielol:
