Power Steering Box Rebuild --All Done

Alright, I am tearing in to my spare power steering box and want to rebuild it this winter.

My plan is to clean everything up and add an extra set of reaction springs and see if it improves the feel (I have two boxes so will steal the springs for the other one).

I currently have everything apart, waiting on the rebuild kit.



Any suggestions on what to clean all the internal parts with and how to ensure they do not corrode while I wait on the rebuild kit.

How about the box itself?  Anything I should avoid on that so I do not contaminate the inside of the box?

The last question, I dropped some needles out of the lower bearing...the rebuild kit come with bearings.  How hard are the bearings to get out of the box??

Factory service manual has info... The hardest part is fining tools to remove the spanner nuts holding the top & back together...

Doubling up the springs works .

I currently have everything apart, waiting on the rebuild kit.

I just use a solvent tank

it's a cast iron box, nothing to hurt

Getting the old one out is the easy part, getting the new one in without damage is what you need to worry about.... A stepped driver & an Arbor Press is your friend...

Yep Factory service manual has the rebuild instructions.  Its not always the easiest to follow, but the exploded view helps.

I found a 3/8the punch or drift and a few good whacks loosened the spanner nuts.  Not too sure on tightening them, yet, but the punch might work.

I'll bee sure to take lots of pics and post some follow ups.

I wish I had a parts washer / solvent tank, but no such luck.

I guess I could just use some solvent and a brush and hit them with that...just a low-tech parts washer.

On the bearings, I am not sure what I will do there...maybe I will need to by a new tool!!

I think I will go with some lacquer thinner and a scuff pad.  It will kill my soft hands, but should clean the box up nice, and keep my marriage intact!

                     True story. My second wife came home unexpectedly one day and heard the dish washer running. She lavished me with praise for taking a hand in the house work.    Said she was going back out grocery shopping, what did I want for dinner.     10 minutes after she left I got the Holley out of the dish washer, threw a few clean plates and bowls in and restarted it. ( It kinda smelled like gas in there )      Bout an hour later she came back, I'm in the garage reassembling the carb. She said " wow, that one's clean."  I said thanks, but honey the dishes are done, you mind getting them out ?  She said no problem .  Had a great dinner that night.  Shoulda kept that one.
