True story. My second wife came home unexpectedly one day and heard the dish washer running. She lavished me with praise for taking a hand in the house work.  :cooldancing:  Said she was going back out grocery shopping, what did I want for dinner.   :2thumbs:  10 minutes after she left I got the Holley out of the dish washer, threw a few clean plates and bowls in and restarted it. ( It kinda smelled like gas in there )   :misbehaving:   Bout an hour later she came back, I'm in the garage reassembling the carb. She said " wow, that one's clean."  I said thanks, but honey the dishes are done, you mind getting them out ?  She said no problem .  Had a great dinner that night.  Shoulda kept that one.   :rebel:

LOL that's awesome!!

Ok,  so here's where I am...a sticking point.

I need to remove the large nut, that is staked in place from the input shaft.

You can see the nut here:

The FSM says to prevent the input shaft from turning, and free the nut from the shaft, but it does not provide any suggestions on how to prevent the shaft from turning.

So any suggestion on how to free this nut without destroying the shaft?

Jason, you can use our 20gal parts washer and we have most likely got the tools or torches you need to get that nut off. I'm off 'til after Christmas, so holler if you care to take us up on it. PM me and I'll give you the address and #. Ian

Here is link to manuals: http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109

Dang.  I didn't realize the manuals were available for download.   I bought the exact same file for my car off of eBay on a CD.   http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/Smileys/default/swear.gif

Slip the steering coupler on the shaft & clamp the coupler.... A little work with a cape chisel then just turn the nut off...  Or since the rebuild kit comes with a new nut you could use a die grinder & relieve the crushed area of the nut by say 60-75% & just unscrew the nut knowing that once relieved the crushed area won't damage the threads....

Now that Xmas is over, I am getting back on track with this project...this was the ticket and I managed to get the big nut of.  It actually came off very easy.

Now I am just continuing with the disassembly and then start the clean up etc.

Allright...so a few more pics fro fun..

Nut off..

you can see the bearing race that lives under the nut.

Under the race is the first of two bearings

That bearing rides on the race below , which also hides a second bearing.  The race also holds in the lower reaction spring.

Now you can pull off the lower reaction spring, retaining ring as well as the lower race.

I was going to stop there....but my FSM shows a seal under the "head"??? which means I needed to take that off as well.

One difficualt snap ring later:

Shows this litte guy!

Now everything on the piston is disassembled.  Time to clean it all up well, wait on the rebuild kit (I decided to wait a bit to order it).

The only other thing I have to do is try to get the two bearing shells out of the box...

and

right now I can not even get the seal out on the second one.

It is a little confusing, the bearings looks like they are pressed in in opposite directions.

In fact my FSM only shows one bearing, the one at the pitman arm???

When you finish it, will there be a way to test it before putting in a car?

I took one apart before, and it's alot of parts and special stuff inside.

I am glad someone does!!!

I am kidding...I think that I can get it back together with out any problems, as long as I can get the bearings out and back in.

When you finish it, will there be a way to test it before putting in a car?

I took one apart before, and it's alot of parts and special stuff inside.

I found once you pull it apart, it makes a little more sense...and the reassembly should go smoothly (I took lots of pics).

Testing it is another thing altogether...short answer is no.  I figure as long as it everything turns smoothly and it feels tight...I will install and see what happens!
