Stall?
« on: December 13, 2015 - 03:22:03 PM »
I'm in the process of restoring my 70' Challenger R/T and was wanting something more then just the stock stall. Its a 440 4bbl with A?C and nearly everything is being put back to stock except I have long tube headers and just a little bigger cam but nothing to crazy. I was thinking about a 2800 stall and have no idea about what brand
What are y'alls thoughts?
Thanks

what's your rear end ratio?
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

You want to make sure your converter is locked at highway speed
You can use this to figure it out http://vexer.com/automotive-tools/speed-rpm-calculator

Is that really necessary. I have a 3500 stall Hughes converter (non lock out), and I cruise on the hwy at 3000 rpm.
I have a good stacked plate B&M tranny cooler in front of radiator.

If the car is primarily a street car - meaning it's driven around all the time on local roads, highways, etc... Then the rule to stay with is what Chryco said... Keep it under your highway cruise rpm. I don't like to have any more than 2500 for most street cars. If your car is doggy with that, chances are there's something else mismatched.
If the car is dual use - racing too - then things are a little different because the assumption is you are willing to live with les mileage and more rpm, and less part throttle response that a higher flash stall will deliver - all for the sake of a higher stall speed at full throttle. For the most part, the modern higher quality convertors can feel tighter at part throttle than at full throttle. But you'll have to buy a good one for that. For the most part anything of an older design (say it's model has been out for longer than 4-5 years) will feel "spongy" at part throttle with milder gearing and higher flash stall speed.

Thanks guys for all the help I think I'm going with a 2500 stall. I found this one on summit and it seems to be what I need http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hup-24-25/overview/make/dodge

I paid $400 for a Hughes 3500 stall. 22 years ago. So far, seems to beworking very well. Maybe I got lucky.

I fell into the dynamic 9 1/2" fab going on.  Will have my first test drive this week. 3000-3400 stalk but very efficient with good street manners

If you like to smash the throttle, and you are getting challenged on the street, I'd go at least 3200.
Also, to avoid future problems, buy a quality converter, spend the money now.
For my 99 Trans Am, I bought a Yank 3200 with lockout. Was $800, but supposed to be worth it.
So far, working great.

Basing entirely on the post regarding "challenged on the street" I'd say you are more of a "racer" than a "cruiser". So no, you were not lucky. You have one that matches your driving and use.
