How to insulate or soundproof roof??
« on: December 15, 2015 - 08:02:57 PM »
I am not using a vinyl top on my 70 challenger,,,,and put a new roof on the car,,,,,
Question,,,,
What can I use for sound proofing the roof before I install the headliner ??
I have some phat mat that used on the floors, etc,,,,but wasn't sure if this would be a good option for the roof or if it would not stick to the roof over time,,,,,
Any thoughts on lizard skin??

Trying to keep heat out,,,avoid the car sounding like a tin can inside,,,etc

Thx for any thoughts.

Hey, yeah I covered my roof with dynamat then installed the headliner, roof sounds like lead now when you tap on it.

I too used NOICO sound deadening mat and also the die cut insulation that I clued with 3M adhesive to the NOICO sound deadening. Might be a little overboard, but what the heck.  :2cents: Good luck.

Dynamat is one of the soundproofing mat you could use.

djw,
Thanks for the reply....
The Phat Mat I have seems to have some adhesive,,,but didn't seem very sticky ( 65* here today ) ,,,especially for the roof
( for the floors and doors I just peeled off the backing and layed it in place )
The 3M adhesive seems like liquid cement once it dries,,,so I added it as well for the roof portion.

Plan now is to get the headliner in,,,,and start more work on the interior..... :woo:

Curious how you guys did your doors ??
did you just do the frame portion that is covered by the door panel ? or did you guys stick it to the actual inside portion or skin of the door ( on the other side of the glass ) ?

Hey Doug , myself I covered the door frame behind the panel. Doors sound really solid when closing and I think it is better than putting it on the outside panel as that would leave a big gap where road noise could still enter the cabin but that's just my  :2cents:.

Car is looking awesome BTW

I installed my NOICO SOUND DEADENER to the inside door skin, refer to pic below. Sorry I don't have a close up handy but I think you get the jest of it  :2thumbs:. I also did the same with the rear quarter panel behind the quarter glass. I will finish up with a layer of sound deadener on the inside door/quarter glass in lieu of plastic dust cover........sweet! Good luck!  :2cents:

Darcy, did you put sound deadener under the dash where the factory jute for the heater box is?

I did, right from the bottom of the windshield to the bottom of the rear glass and all of the roof along with the sides,100% covered

One thing I've seen done on roofs that I feel makes sense, cut the sound deadener into small squares, maybe 3x3 that way if a square comes loose it doesn't pull a whole roof section loose just a small square....   And yes the 3M spay adhesive has got to help.... Thought I would look for the high temp version....
