Wiring Help
« on: December 22, 2015 - 08:02:59 PM »
When I bought my car with an la 360 engine not installed, all of the engine compartment harnesses had been removed from the bulkhead connector, and I have a box of harnesses.    The car was originally a points 318 car and a previous owner had converted it to electronic ignition.

Now Im trying to hook up the harnesses, and Im lost.    Please look at the pictures I took of the harness with the ECU and electronic voltage regulator connectors on it.    There appear to be "extra" connections.

1) Can anyone tell me what the two plastic connectors are supposed to go to??  Never saw anything like them.

2) Also, the harness appears to have an extra connector in black on it for I guess the bulkhead, but darned if I can figure out what to do with it.

3) Any idea where the wires at the end of the harness are supposed to go to ?

Thanks for the help !!

Electronic ignition box, electric distrib, electronic 4 prong ballast resister. The black plug in is for an extension plg in to the alt, watertemp and  crap. Kinda looks like a 74 but maybe a 73 car set. the other wires are maybe for car seat lock with seat belt fasten to give voltage to the key switch.

Believe Alan's correct.. large red 2-wire plug goes on a '74 with seat belt interlock..

The plugs themselves (the white plugs) go into the bulk head connector generally only one way.

I could be wrong on the "points distributor" converted to electronic.   Anyone know if 1974 vehicles came with electronic ignition??   Can anyone send me a 1974 manual.   I was able to download a 1970 challenger dart service manual, but it doesnt show anything for electronic ignition.   So, can anyone let me know where I can download a 1974 manual??  Or send me wiring diagrams??

Thanks

Yes, 74 had electronic ignition. Lots of wiring diagrams online, not difficult to wire in.

Thanks for the help.   Still trying to figure out what goes where.   Thanks for the link to the wiring diagrams at mymopar.   I ordered from ebay a paper copy of the 1974 dodge body manual.   Hopefully with it I can figure it all out.

There are still some "disconnects" logically in my mind.   Example the small white plastic connectors on the harness would appear to be seat belt relay and buzzer connectors.   That doesn't tell me how or where they should connect.

I think I am missing some harness parts, as the two bottom 4 pin connectors on the bulkhead.  I seem to be missing the wiring harness that would plug into them.   I think they are for the  by the diagrams appear to be mostly for the the windshield wiper .

The black 8 pin connector...looks like on the wiring diagram a shows as "engine to dash conn"   but no wires on the wiring diagram go to it.   If there is a harness for it...   I don't have it.

Lots of unknowns..

if possible, lay out the harness, take a picture (or use one you already have), drop/import it into power point (or whatever program you prefer), put circles around the connectors you are wondering about. It is hard to visualize what you are talking about. Everything you show in your pictures are engine compartment harness (I believe). The big square blocks go into your firewall receptacle and they only plug in one way (each as a unique channel/bump on one side/corner that corresponds to a receiving set in the firewall receptacle).

Sure:
1) in the picture what are the "A" connectors and where would they go ??   I'm referring to the two smaller plastic connectors with plastic posts sticking out.

2) The B wire...is that for ground to chassis or where does it go ??

3) "C" and C1 connectors    1 has gray wire and 1 has two yellow wires...   Do they go onto the resistor mounted on top of the windshield wiper motor?   Or where?

3) "C2" Red plastic connector has two wires going into it...   what is it and where does it go ?

4) "C3'  Yellow wire..   where does it go?

The 8 pin black connector (shown in a wiring diagram as engine to dash connector) has another harness that obviously plugs into it, and then has a separate black wire connector tor it...   that part is easy..   tough part is:

5) Connector G ?  It has blue and yellow wires going into it
Connector G1  It has Gray ? wire with female spade connector
Connector G2  It has I think black with yellow stripe wire with push on connector
Connector g3   It has black wire with a RED push on connector, then blue wire with capacitor  H  where does this go?

6) J is a pinkish wire with black push on connector

7) " I "is a heavy black wire Im assuming goes onto the "batt" connector on alternator ??

8) "I2" is a dark brown with black female spade connector..    ??   choke heater??

any help is appreciated!!

9) "i3" yellow wire with black female spade connector    Is this one of the "fld" posts on alternator?

10) "I4" dark blue wire with black female spade connector      Is the the other "fld" post on alternator??    if yes to both 9 and 10 does it matter which goes to which of the two "fld" posts?

I don't own a 74 but I think I can answer some of these:

A = Connectors for the ballast resistor
B = Ground
C = Harness that goes up to the alternator
      C & C1 = horns
      C3 = coil
      C2 = I'm guessing electronic distributor

I believe you are correct, for A.

the ground goes to one bolt on the wiper motor.

Here is what I think after looking at a number of wiring diagrams. Where I typed "I believe", this is my best guess looking at the wires. Once you lay out the harness and ID a couple of connections you can ascertain where the rest or most of them go. Another issue is the emission stuff which everyone threw away. I am not overly knowledgeable on these connections. The ones I am very certain of are A, B, G1, G2, G3, I, I2, I3, I4, J. You need to down load or purchase a schematic.

A - Ballast connector (4 pin style)
B - Ground wire; goes on one of the wiper motor bolts
C - By the color, I think it should go S post of the starter relay, but the end is wrong
C1 - Appears to be for the starter relay (G side)
C2 - I believe this to be for Safety Neutral switch
C3 - By the color, this should go to the I side of the starter relay, however it has the wrong end on it
G - Something on or near the firewall behind and near the distributor; perhaps the wiper motor?
G1 - Oil Pressure sending unit
G2 - Negative side of the coil
G3 - Positive side of the coil
H - I believe this is a tach wire and would go under the nut on the positive side of the coil (if this is a rallye harness and your car came with a tach)
I - Alt Battery
I2 - Alt Field
I3 - Alt Field
I4 - Fast idle
J- Temperature sending unit

Thanks for the information guys.    I had downloaded the wiring diagram for a 74 from mymopar.    However the wiring diagrams dont show the harnesses and how to identify.

What is making this extremely difficult is "corrosion".    In at least three cases now, I have traced a wire thru the harness and tested for connectivity with a multimeter..only to have it fail.  Apparently this car sat for at least 9 years since its last usage, and I believe that corrosion INSIDE of the wiring connectors is causing failures.    Now, Im going to have to buy some new connectors (most are either male or female spade connectors), cut the wire and put on new connectors and then retest.   This being the case sure makes it difficult.     I will keep on plowing thru it one wire at a time.

I am very sure you don't want to hear this, but I strongly recommend you purchase new harnesses (each segment such as engine, lighting, etc can be purchased separately). I went through this same deal with my Challenger and ended up buying new harnesses; new, clean, better wire etc. The problem is that if there is corrosion you don't know how far it goes and you could do a lot of work for nothing. If money is an issue, I completely understand, however if you can swing it, you will be far happier.
