Firm Feel Help Now With Pictures
« on: December 23, 2015 - 09:49:39 AM »
Hi Guys,

I know this topic has been brought up before but I'm really looking for affirmation since it's so much money.  I have a street driven 1971 convertible 340 challenger.  I'm installing a Tremec 5 speed.  I'm tossed with the stage 2 or stage 3 units from Firm Feel.  Firm Feel said that if I'm questioning which one to get the stage 3 that way I won't second guess myself and I won't be disappointed.  However all of my old cars have been manual steering and that's not what I want.  I want to be able to pull into a parking spot easily without muscling the car.  Help

Any and all information you can give me is appreciated.  I'm going to pull the trigger in a day or two.  Thanks

Dave

This is really a personal preference,  I had a stock box and changed to a stage 3 with fast ratio arms. It's exactly what I wanted. You can steer with one hand and it's not difficult.
That being said,  it's a lot stiffer than the stock box which you could use one finger to steer.

I'm going Stage III.  I have seen plenty of posts saying Stage III is excellent, and most guys that went with Stage II post they wished they would have gone Stage III.

I went with stage II, kinda like the stock finger streering! But also wanted a better feel.

Did your car originally have power steering from the factory ?

There's documented cases where 1971 340 Challengers ended up with T/A steering boxes....check the side of your box for a large T/A cast into it first... :2cents:

Here is what I have.  The box looks really good maybe I shouldn't replace I?  I just figured while I had it all out it was the right thing to do.

The numbers are as follows:

Sorry they were too big to attach so I made them smaller.

Not a T/A box, sent it in & have it built as a stage 3 you won't regret it...

This is a T/A box...

Me again I already bought the Mopar Universal Joint Adapter for power steering Flaming River FR1506P (5/8 X 36) to replace the rag joint.  That will work with my stock unit wont it?   :clueless:

It will work but your car doesn't have a "Rag Joint" it has a coupler which I strongly recommend you keep, It allows the steering to move in three planes and still give a tight connection between the steering box & the steering column.... The Flaming River U joint only allows movement in two planes, there is no provision for slight movements lengthwise...

I have a stage II FF box, with FR arms, love it, should have had a stage III instead though.
