The $100,000 resto-mod question......need opinions.

I am currently looking for a 1970 - 71 Challenger Convertible for a resto mod project.   This is definitely not my first rodeo building a car but it will be my first Mopar build.  The details are new Hemi motor with a 5 speed, 13" brakes, aftermarket A/C, nice interior, premium custom wheels.......a nice car on the upper scale of quality.  The car will be built at a shop rate and not in a garage by an owner.  The question is at what level to purchase a car for something like this.  There is nothing that I cannot do in my shop from fabrication to paint to electrical.  I do know that parts are cheaper than labor.  Anytime I can buy a part instead of using labor its a financial savings.   So, the $15K rust bucket concerns me because the tremendous amount of metal work and the fact many parts are missing......interior, bumpers, and what ever else is hard to find. Cheap entry cost but much labor and many parts.   Or, the nice driver quality better put together that might not need as much metal work and might have some additional good parts I could use.  Case in point.......I bought a 70 Chevelle convertible project a few years ago with all new metal but a bare shell.  Although it was mainly a shell I literally built the car via Ecklers because darn near every part is available.  What I find is no matter what kind of car I build when it gets to a certain level old or worn parts don't look good on a nice car.    So..........what would you buy if you had $100K to throw around on a project?

100K won't get you there, this isn't a Chevy, there are parts that $$$ can't buy.....  Like rear interior panels....  To build a high level car you'll need a bigger budget... Sorry I'd rather warn you up front....

I think you can do it:
Spend $50k on a finished car, then another $50k for the mods.
Sounds like you already know, it's best to start with the most complete car you can find.
$50k should get you a nice /6 or SB car that doesn't need much work.

If I only had $100K to spend, I would buy a done car or somebody else's abandon project. You're looking at a third of your budget at least just to buy a decent rustfree builder IF you can find one.

Well, what can you say? Alan builds these things for a living and if anybody here should know what it costs- it's likely him. Just my  :2cents: But, if you're willing to invest some sweat equity, personally, I think it'd do-able, but you'll be doing a fair bit of it.

I completely agree with the others, to obtain the car you laid out you need to find someone with a 80% car perhaps with a conventional wedge drive train and then do the mods you want. The problem is going to be finding "that" car. There are so many people who have tried to built "quick flips" and taken a lot of short cuts to get something to auction. It will be difficult to find a car without a lot of hidden issues; you need to allot some money to hiring someone or several people who are very knowledgeable in Mopars to go over any prospective car.

 :wavingflag: I am at 20k just in parts already and haven't even started to look at paint and finish body and still about 10 need in odds and ends to get her roadworthy.  with that budget buy one from Alan and add what you want. LOL :2cents:

A decent starter is gonna be at least 30K & a better starting point could easily take 50-60K

So the labor is done in a shop, does that mean the labor cost is included in the 100K & what is the hourly rate.....

Probably a good starting point. Its all new and then you just have labor to create the convertible differences.

The $100K seemed a nice even number.   My biggest concerned was your point about parts that are not available.  P.S. I know its not a Chevy......these dang Mopars are a totally different animal!!

I know but that takes all of the fun out of it!!!  I would build the car.....its the challenge of building a Challenger!!

I thought about Dynacon but one would need a VIN tag to make it "real".  My concern is spending the a tremendous amount of money on a made up car.  I just finished a 63 Split window corvette resto mod in the $200K+ range.  I still had people asking me if it was a "real" body.  Dang right its real for that kind of dough.

I completely agree with the others, to obtain the car you laid out you need to find someone with a 80% car perhaps with a conventional wedge drive train and then do the mods you want. I agree with your theory and the problem is exactly as you stated........not knowing the "bones" of the car and how it was put together.  That car is out there for sure.....just have to find it.

I got on this forum just because of the land of Mopars!  They are one big pain in the butt from my prospective but I think that is what makes them so interesting.  I mentioned some of the details because it would keep it more in prospective cost wise.......lets say keep it from being a $150K+ build.

Of course you will need brakes, frame stiffening, suspension, etc. $100K going to be light. I have been building my Cuda for a long time, have $40K in it and no where near done. I wont have $100K in it, but it will not be as nice as what you are looking for.

Better idea, go to the Auctions and find the gem and buy it; you will be money ahead.
