help! my race car cuda needs numbers to be street driven
« on: June 02, 2005 - 10:35:47 AM »
I just picked up a 70's rolling barracuda drag car. during it's race car days, the dash was removed along with the vin tag and the title got lost along the way. I'd like to throw an engine in it and drive it around but oregon DMV requires full Vin numbers to retitle it as a reconstructed car which is where I come up short.  I can still use it as a drag car but I can't get plates to drive it on the street without a vin.  I'm hoping someone out there has a 70's parts car that's rusted beyond repair or cut up but still has the numbers, vin or even a title around they would consider selling.. I'm not looking build a fake to sell for big bucks just a toy for me.. a 6cyl or 318 vin car would be ideal.  I'm prepared to pay $100 cash plus shipping if somebody has got the numbers package I can use vin and title and hopefully even a core support and cowl numbers..

What you are proposing is illegal. You cannot alter a car's vin in any way. I'm not saying what you are proposing is an attempt to defraud anyone, but technicaly it's illegal to do that.

If the car passes a safety and visual test from the Highway patrol, they should be able to issue you a certificate of compliance to drive on the street.Call your local Highway Patrol and ask them.

You might be able to find the munbers on the block near some of the spart plugs...

Or just see if the DMV will issue you a new VIN.

go to the junk yard and get a vin off a 70-74 cuda. who cares what year or other #'s . As long as its a cuda and the same body style. Then apply for a title from broadway title service. your only using it so its legit on the road.

:dontknow: I think I understand what your saying Nick, but that is bad advice, as was mentioned - this route is illegal. I think the advice to contact the state Highway Patrol in his home state is the best advice and way to go here. It should be the same as restoring a salvaged titled car (I've done this), you need (1) bill of sale and or salvage title and (2 ) have the car inspectied by the state. If it passes you then will be given a  legal title and then can register and get plates for your car.

You may find someone willing to sell them to you but swapping numbers onto your body is highly frowned upon even though you are not trying to commit fraud. You should be able to get the numbers off the cowl or rad support and figure out the rest or trace back the previuos owners for the vin number. As others have said most states will issue a salvage vin and title for the car after checking it out as long as you have a bill of sale for the car and any parts you have replaced.Going that route you will be fully legal and not have to worry about getting caught with bogus numbers on your car.

Gotcha, WSM.
 :spank:
Maybe title it as a custom vehicle. I know NJ has a special thing you have to fill out and have your car inspected.  Cobra kit cars and some hot rods need to do this

I agree, swapping numbers from one car to another is ilegal. The best route in this case is a state issued VIN. The local DMV can tell you what you need to do.

How about checking the top of the cowl area on the drivers side...that would give you the last eight characters of the vin. Then have a reputable appraiser in your area who's familiar with Mopars pay a visit to authenticate the first the first five characters. Might show enough good faith to the Oregon DMV for them to issue the needed papers. Might even cost less than $100

Here is another thing to consider....what if you go to your State's DMV with the #'s off of the radiator support/ cowl, give them to the DMV for a title trace and it turns out it's a stolen car? You could possibly lose the car. Just something to consider. You are in a tough place without  a legal title.

find the Vin off the Rad. cowl and go to that site we recently talked about....UMMMM Car search? pre check it on the internet first. That'll keep you out of hot water with the cops.
but if it is Hot, :fire: drop it.
