I finally know what a 440 Six-Pack is supposed to feel like :-)
« on: December 30, 2015 - 08:51:28 PM »
So... after nearly 10 years of owning my Challenger, I finally have a built 440 Six Pack...

Here's what went in:

Lunati Voodoo 703 cam
Lunati valve springs, retainers and locks
440 Source forged connecting rods w/ ARP bolts
ICON (dished) forged pistons (.030 over)
Total Seal piston rings
ARP main studs
440 Source Six Pack-spec oil pan
Melling high-volume oil pump
440 Source high-volume aluminum water pump
440 Source SFI fluid damper
440 Source Windage tray
440 Source billet adj. timing chain
440 Source high-temp head gaskets

Heads are 915s that were cleaned up, but nothing major.

Everything balanced.

I'm still in break in... but man. This thing is a beast. The couple times that I've wound it up enough to get the secondary carbs to kick in... wow.

It's why I've stayed with it for a decade and countless $$$ spent.

And big thanks for the advice I received on parts selection... and on everything else over the years. This site, and the people who make it up... truly the best.

:iagree:  Yep, what the man said! The 440-6's were commonly acknowledged to be as fast as- or faster- than the hemi's except perhaps at the very top end. I believe there was a magazine test that also showed that. Congrats!

If you have a track near by, you should run it if possible. They always feel good at first and I just like to run them to make sure they are up to par. You are right though a 440 six pack should be impressive.

When I got the car in 2005, it was supposedly recently rebuilt and running a 4bbl edelbrock on a tall intake... with an MSD ignition, but it never ran right.

1st thing was to re-wire the engine compartment, which was a mess and swap out the MSD for a stock electronic ignition setup (I'm going for stock appearance) and drop on a new six-pack setup.

Anyway... the thing still wasn't right. It was waaayyy better and had decent power, but it was always off. And got progressively worse...

Fast forward till when I finally was in a position to do the motor right and come to find out the cam was totally worn. God knows how many miles it had. So much for recently rebuilt when I got it.  :swear:

Anyways, I didn't really know what I had until we tore it down. But come to find out it had the internal-balanced forged crank, so that was good news. I believe it's a 68-69 440 if I recall from decoding the block. No idea what it came out of, though. And the fact that it had an 18-spline A833 makes me wonder if someone with a high-end car isn't missing their drivetrain. :-\

As for my gears, it's currently running the original open 8.75 w 3.23 gears. A posi 3.55 is on my list.

I totally agree.  When you put your foot into it, and those outboards open up, you better be paying attention!!  I love that rush when the power comes on almost violently.  Major noise and the feel of the g-force into the seat is awesome.  Im sure a four barrel set up is more than adequate and may even make better power and drivability, but I still love my 6bbl!  Now if I could only find a way to suppress my urge to do that every couple of miles, maybe my gas milage would improve to a reasonable MPG.
