5.7 Hemi Dart project
« on: June 02, 2005 - 10:44:13 PM »
About 2-3 years ago I documented the restoration of my Challenger on this website so I thought it would be neat to do my 5.7 Hemi Dart project on here too. Thought some of you might find the new 5.7 Hemi swap interesting. I'll be stepping thru this right along with you because I've never done anything like this before (new engine / old car).

I'm going to start with some "before" pictures..
I'll post some of my Dart and then various engine pics.

I'll be keeping an eye on your progress. I always wanted to do a swap like this....if I ever do, it will be in the way distant future(years). Out of curiousity, what did the 5.7 come out of? is it a crate engine? or a production motor?

Here are the Hemi engine pics.
The engine came out of a wrecked 2004 Ram truck. It had less than 1000 miles on it.
These first pics are of the engine before I removed some stuff.

Yep. '69 Dart..

These next set of pics are of the engine after the truck engine mounts, wiring harness and exhaust manifolds have been removed..

The first step in the project is to swap my power steering to a manual box. I just sent a manual box to Firm Feel to get rebuilt with a 16:1 steering ratio. I'm waiting for its return in about a week or so. You have to use the manual box when installing the Hemi in an A-body. The steering will be swapped while the current engine (360) is in the car. I'll have pictures of the steering later on.

what trans are you going to use ? do they sell a carb intake seperatly yet or just the crate motor.

Very nice.     is this going to be a sleeper a (gt) or are you going to make it a swinger, GTS or a custom GTH   Grand Touring Hemi ?

Several questions...

Is that oil pan going to clear the k-frame or are you doing a custom front end? (Alterkation?)

Are you putting headers on it? (Please say yes!)

Any additional mods to the motor while it's out?

And...

Is the 360 up for sale?!?!

Can't wait to see this happen Bob! After seeing you Challenger, I know you do quality work... and this should be very cool!! Carlisle '06?? :dontknow:

Wow, lots of questions!

OK. Here's the deal..
TTI will be producing the engine mounts and the headers for this swap. The mounts and headers will be available for A, B & E bodies. TTI told me last week that these items should be available by the end of June. I saw the A-body Hemi display that TTI had at the Mopar Spring Fling show in LA, in April. They actually had a 5.7 Hemi mounted on a A-body subframe on display. I put the picture below. The mounts and headers appear to work great on their display.
As I said earlier, manual steering is required to clear the headers for the A-body swap.
I will be using the 904 transmission that I currently have in the car. The new Hemi bolts up to the old and new transmissions. What I don't know yet is what flexplate to use.
The oil pan will have to be changed. You can see in the TTI display picture that they used a pan from Charlie's Oil Pans.

As far as the car is concerned, I will leave it as is to start with until I get the drivetrain sorted out. I plan on changing the car to a Dart GTS. The car originally had a slant6 and was light green with a green interior. I'm planning on re-doing it in Silver with a Red interior and a Red bumblebee stripe on the rear. Might also add the custom aluminum gauge bezel with modern gauges. The car will look stock except for the engine, dash and wheels. Will probably use the Torquethrust II wheels (17x7, 17x8).

Just putting the engine in with the headers, cold air intake and not having any catalytic converters, this engine will probably be close to 400hp in stock form. With the aluminum heads and all the aluminum bolt-on stuff on front of engine, I imagine the engine weighs less than a small block.

As far as the Mopar crate engine questions, I don't know much. I don't think anything is available seperately yet. You have to buy the whole crate engine package.

My current 360 engine is already spoken for. Sorry guys!

Stay tuned!!

Is that a tremec TKO transmission behind that Hemi??? Does Keisler make a kit to swap a TKO behind a 5.7 Hemi??? Sorry for asking a million questions, but this swap has really got my attention. Just looking at all those pictures is giving me a million ideas.....

I believe Keisler has been advertising the Hemi/tremec bolt-up deal for at least 6 months..
I may go that route myself if the 904 doesn't hold up.
