Common parts that fail / things to keep spares of in an E-Body?
« on: January 07, 2016 - 10:28:28 AM »
Now that I'm actually driving my Challenger on a regular basis (woohoo!) I'm thinking about keeping a spare of common parts that fail in the car.

I know the ballast resistor is a good one, and I've heard voltage regulators go out unexpectedly sometimes... Anything else?

The fuse-able link at the starter relay is a good part to have on hand.  Always kept a spare in the glove box even years back so I wouldn't get stranded.

I would also keep a spare set of points, rotor and cap back in the old days.  Less problems if you converted to an electronic ignition though on a 70-71 car.

If electronic I keep a spare ecu, reluctor pick-up, distributor cap, ballast resister, coil, voltage reg, and jumper wire. I carry a spare upper rad hose and fan belt to run the water pump and steering. Most importantly a cel phone and good towing insrurance.

I have been driving about 20 000 miles in last four summer, my driveline is modern, so no issues there.
But a windscreen wiper system(2-speed) seems to be quite weak and prone to have problems. Also couple voltage regulators have broke. And turn signal switches. Learned also only use quality ball joints and bushes (Moog).

My only failures have been at the hands of old gaskets so I keep a tube of high Temp RTV.

Great thread idea, I'm new to Mopars so this is good to know. Not specifically Mopar but, I keep a better quality tire plug kit (corded not solid rubber) and a 12v air compressor because I don't have a spare, plus it's just faster and easier to plug your tire.

I once has the stud on the carb break off at the threads; car would idle but I had not way to accelerate because the throttle cable was disconnected, I was wearing a GI field jacket that has a cotton pull tab on the zipper; I removed it and tied the end of the throttle cable to the carb linkage and limped it home. From then till now I keep a small amount of bailing wire in all my vehicles.

Basically, wire, some flex ties, a tube of RTV and some duct tape (of course some basic hand tools as well). If these wont get you to the nearest gas station/repair shop (or home if you are local); cell phone and AAA...

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Good stuff.

@70chall440... Love it. Zip ties, bailing wire and duct tape. I can think of a ton of problems that would solve.

Water and the radiator stop leak. Never know what might what might get kicked up and make a hole at the high rate of speed we are capable of... :burnout:

My way of thinking is as many small things that don't weigh a lot and kill the trunk space.

Not a replacement part but one of these new micro jump boxes.  I have the XP-10 here http://themicrostart.com/products/micro-starts/  I can tell you it rolls the 340 over no problem and starts my E150 with ease.

I might have to get one of those, for traveling and perhaps jumping a vehicle. I wonder how the smaller units do for jumping a vehicle.

Commonly fails... Dash boards crack, who wants to lend me their spare?   :roflsmiley:

Another thing that fails? Those 70 style heater water valves, the red & black ones... When I built my car I got one at the local Napa, $12...OE red & black... It failed after about five years, Got another one Napa again.. $26.... It lasted about five years... Napa no longer could get the red/black valve replacement is a 71 & up metal valve.. Wanted to keep the OE look, found one on Ebay... Most were selling for $120-150ish.. I watched & caught one for $90... It lasted about five years.... Are we seeing a pattern here?   :roflsmiley:
