70 R/T drivetrain wiw
« on: January 10, 2016 - 12:53:11 PM »
Guy that builds Racecars called me today. A customer brought him a 70 Challenger R/T 383 , 4 speed, 8 3/4 rear car to make into a race car. He said the guy inherited it from his grandfather, an original 46K mile car. He wants to sell the complete drivetrain including everything, motor thru rear end, radiator, shifter, all of it. Its unmolested with original air cleaner, valve covers, etc. Said he's asking $5000.00 for eveything.   So whatcha all think ?   He is sending me pictures in the morning.   :feedback:

Transmission is the only thing of real value....I'd say $3K-$4k would be doable.....
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

I would think $2000....maybe up to $3000.  With the motor you still don't know what condition it is in, unless you go there and hear it run or drive it before they pull it apart.

If you had to sell the parts separately you would struggle to get more than you paid for them.

The main value (IMO) is if you had a car needing all these parts.

$500 rearend if it's sure grip, $150 for big U-joint driveshaft, $500 trans, $200 shifter, $400 flywheel and bellhousing, $100 aircleaner, $300 exhaust manifolds, $100 if the carb is correct, $500 for the rest of the core engine, $100 for the correct # rad. Yep $3k max and it has to be to the right guy because those are pretty much retail values.
Darn shame an R/T gets cut up though. Man if a relative left me a car (or anything else for that matter) I sure would show it more respect, but that's a personal decision and not mine to make I guess.

Without the RT body, the block/motor/manifolds/carb is just another 383 and then is just a parts motor. $750+/- Trans/shifter/bell-housing/drive-shaft/etc.  is around $1800 +/-,  Rear end, is it open or ? guessing $500 if open then can go up from there.

Just my  :2cents:

Thing is though if you had a Mopar that needed all these parts and you were a date code and cast # guy this could be a great score all at one shot. That's why that guy would pay $3k all at once. That's why I say it needs the right guy, I'm not too anal about this stuff but I myself would pay $3k in a nanosecond if I had a car needing all these parts.
For the shop though, they are not going to find that guy, it will sell locally by word of mouth and they will be lucky to get $1500 out of it.

I hear ya. But he says it's all original runs perfect low miles motor. Beautiful car. Thinks it has original spark plugs. I'm going to try a different angle on this because he contacted us regarding wether we needed the drivetrain for our RT/SE builder for sale.  :rebel:
