Yea I was really hoping to see the pics. I went with an aftermarket wiring harness for my Cuda but really wanted a bulkhead connector (just makes sense and is easier to deal with). Wonder if he is watching this and would post the pics again or perhaps in his original thread?

You can sort of see the ampseal connectors from the engine side here in his EFI thread

Not the best picture.  I think he's busy w/ school so eventually he'll reply to the PMs

So looks like I'm in exceptional hands around here as usual!  I love this place.  I'm not dealing with a bulkhead connector. Trying to get away from any large wire looms in the bay.  Figured on the connections and the old harness on some stuff.  I'll do my best and ask questions as I go. Hope you guys don't mind.   My room mate is doing the same one in his Demon. At about the same stage as I am. So we can run through it together as well.   I'll start small.    Cut stuff a little long. There's quite a bit of trimming to do.    And a couple extensions with the battery in the trunk.  Gotta pic a spot for the starter switch.   Trying to hide stuff.   Wish me luck.

good luck.

Just do yourself a favor, lay it all out and try and make sure you have all or most of the things installed or know where they go before cutting and terminating. Be mindful of where the wires run, what they are near, etc. I have spent a lot of time and $ on wiring equipment, I bought a lot of weather pack connectors along with all of the ends and tools for them. Bought some Mag Daddy magnetic fasteners http://www.magdaddyusa.com/products.php which are awesome to use (and reuse). I also bought a lot of braided sleeving because I think it looks so much better than that corrugated tubing and I didn't want to wrap the wires in tape in case I ever needed to get to something; best place I have found is here http://www.delcity.net/store/Standard-Braided-Sleeving/p_807327 and this site is great for many things electrical. Know that the common auto shops (Summit, Painless, etc) are not your only sources and many times you can get the same or similar (or even better) products from other places (the web is a great place).

If you intend to install any after market stuff such as stereos or whatever, do yourself a favor and mount at least 3 power distribution blocks such as found here http://www.cloudelectric.com/category-s/12890.htm one for constant power, one for keyed power and one for a ground. You will be very happy you did later. Basically you can easily connect whatever you like without hacking into some other wire or hoping you get a good ground in sheet metal and/or poking holes all over the place.

Lastly, in conjunction with your factory wiring diagram and whatever the loom came with, I HIGHLY recommend you keep really good notes on what you wire and where. I have a 3 ring binder that has sections in it; one that has the factory loom, one that has the aftermarket diagram and sections for every unique wiring system/s I have (EFI system, any of the gauges, etc). If you ever have an issue you will be glad you did.

Have fun

This is great advice...thanks. You are very organized and obviously put a lot of thought into it. I am also one that doesn't like wiring and may not see this as "fun". You aren't that far from me...feel free to wire my Cuda when I get to that stage!

I just cleared out my inbox; apparently it's been full for a few years  :eek7:

Don't want to know how many others I've missed.  I just so happened to stumble on that from this thread!  I installed a Painless 18 circuit harness when they only offered the universal ones.  Realistically, with everything I've done, the Mopar specific one wouldn't have saved me any time.

My personal rules on wiring:

 - Nothing on the exterior of the car gets an unsealed and non weatherproof connection, period!

 - Use weather sealed power distribution blocks under the hood.  No corrosion, far more compact, and you won't have a ton of random relays/fuse busses being an eyesore.  I use 2 Bussman blocks and love them.

 - Any splicing or teeing of circuits is done with crimped/soldered connections and adhesive lined, dual wall heatshrink (normal heat shrink OK for interior).  They make prebuilt butt connectors for this, I just use the heat shrink and non insulated butt splices to make my own because I'm cheap.  Pain is finding the corroded to nothing splice you did with butt connectors or regular heat shrink years later when you don't know where you made the splice.  I use this  heat shrink on non insulated ring terminals too when I do grounds.  Again, crimped and soldered.  The semi rigid heat shrink tube type adds strain relief and support, and also eliminates flexing of the solder joint that can cause failure.

 - Make detailed wiring schematics!  I make mine like a factory manual: circuit numbers, gauge, color, connector pinouts, splice/connector location, etc...

 - Use convolute tubing or whatever you prefer to loom the wires.  Nothing looks worse and is more prone to damage later on that spaghetti jobs

 - Use zip ties or 1-2 wraps of electrical tape to band the harness inside the convolute ever 6-10" or so.  It helps the harness hold the shape you route it in and keep it protected

 - I use a decent electrical tape and wrap the convolute completely the entire length of the harness with overlap.  Again, it keeps the harness in, other things out, and can be worked to assist with routing and branching.  I do the same around T's and branches to make it hold shape.

 - Use P-clamps where possible to route the harness.  Zip ties work too, but use them with moderation.  They look like crap when used in excess and make it a bear to get everything back where it should be if you ever move it to work on something.

 - Bulkhead connectors are work, but so is cutting 70+ wires and resplicing them correctly if you ever have to remove that harness.  Best to do it on the bench and NOT when everything is installed...  Also makes it difficult to maintain a seal between the engine bay and interior.

 - If you have to wire in something to a component with multiple wires and no connector, use a modern Metripack, Molex, or Weatherpack connector instead (ebay has a few sellers that have individual connector kits with a male/female connector body, pins, and seals for cheap, usually get a few spare pins too).  Don't use 10 spade connectors.  Looks like crap and causes service problems if everything isn't colored the same on both sides.  I have a mix of Weatherpack, Molex, Ampseal, and Metripack 150/280 connectors depending on location, pin density, and current rating.  Makes for simple disconnects too.

 - No scotchlocks or T-taps!!!!  Just don't!  Crimp/solder/shrink splices per above.

 - If you have to use wire other than what came with your kit, spend the little bit extra and get TXL/SXL/GXL wire of your color/gauge choice (Wire Barn and ebay are cheap sources if this).  Don't use that GPT garbage that you find locally.

Anyways, if anybody needs specific info about the Tyco Ampseal connectors I used for my bulkhead, just let me know....

quagmire - could you post a picture of 2 of your builkhead connector? I am really interested in seeing how you did it.

Here's a few pics.  I had to trim the opening a little bit to fit 3 connectors, but 1 or 2 would fit with no modifications.  That's 105 wires I can run, and a lot of them are used on my build.  Most people would need nowhere near that.

The aluminum plate mounts using the factory bulkhead mounting holes and is sealed around the perimeter with foam weatherstrip.  Speaking of, I need to trip the excess off.  Then again, I don't spend much time staring at it so who cares.  In order to mate the wires to the headers I crimped/soldered Ampseal pins to the wires and then slid and soldered them onto the header pins.  They slide over the pins firmly and made it far easier than trying to clamp or hold the wires in place to solder.  I then heat shrunk the pins.

The pics are really zoomed in so it is not as messy as it looks.  What you see is only where they attach to the headers.  Roughly an inch or two back the wires are all bundled, zip tied for strain relief, and P-clamped along with being wrapped in convolute tubing in a clean harness.

The connectors, headers, and pins are extremely cheap and readily available through Digikey, Mouser, etc....  They also have smaller connectors with less pins, but these aren't much more than 1" tall and maybe 2.5" wide.

Yes, there is a T-tap in one of the pics.....  It was temporarily installed to make sure my TCM was seeing inputs correctly before I final installed everything.

Awesome, thank you for the pictures. I am really liking that and the concept. I am going to have to relook my wiring. I have everything laid out but nothing hooked up. I also have the dash out so I can completely get to the firewall. I had originally closed up the stock bulk head connector area, but I could easily put a new hole there.

On the inside, it looks like each wire indpendently slides onto a pin?
