I'm done...no more restoring cars for myself....it would have to be the "perfect" project.....and I doubt I will find that.

I can see that, pretty tough to build these cars and come out even never mind making a profit.

Since I don't personally know you Alan, I cannot comment on your statement albeit to say I have said "I'm done" many times only to find something else. that said if you are doing restorations for a job I can certainly understand not wanting to or having time to do something on the side as a personal project.

Regardless, thanks for bringing another one back to life and giving it a second chance; I am sure the car and the new owner thank you as well.

It's not the time or the effort that bugs me...it's the money.... :crying:

Congrats on the sale Alan. Just curious what your profit margin was, and do you think it was worth it factoring in your investment and labor. ??

LOL

Who asks a question like this on a public forum? Why would anyone answer it truthfully? It is like asking a gambler how they did in Vegas?

From Alan's comments it would seem that it wasn't monetarily worth the effort. Take into account that Alan probably worked for free on this project.

From my personal experience it does not pay to restore or even refinish a car worth less than $125,000. The cost to properly restore a car is $75-80K. It does not matter if it is a 340 or Hemi car. So if you pick a 340 car you cannot pay anything for the car unless you want to be upside down.

I can't speak to the cost accurately but your statement about them being the same is accurate. When I was looking for a Challenger, I had the option of a 2 1970 cars; one was a 318 is driving shape and the other a 440 AT AC RT but in very bad shape; both the same price. Talking to a buddy he said, "when you are done, which would you rather have, a BB RT or a SB non-RT, because even though the 318 car was running, you will end up putting the same into them". He was right and thanks to him I chose the RT which I still have. I am not a big "resto" guy so that doesn't really bother me one way or another, but none of them are cheap at the end of the day. I think a lot of people lose sight of this and buy those craigslist or ebay cars for way too much money.

I got an email from the new owner of my car yesterday, he seemed happy when I asked him if he would write a testimonial for my web site....

Here's what he wrote:  http://www.alangallantautomotiverestoration.com/AAR-FC7-CUDA.html  (scroll down)
