Upgrade a MSD 6A to a MSD 6AL or Better
« on: January 15, 2016 - 10:14:40 AM »
I have been running a 6A box which does not give me the ability to limit the rpm's. I am going to upgrade the box and was wondering if anyone knew if the harness would plug straight across into the new box. I sure don't want to have to re wire things.

I could be wrong, but I think the wiring is pretty close. I have a 6A mounted but will be replacing it with a 6AL which I already bought. I looked at the wiring diagrams and as I remember it, they were very close (could be off, but thier diagrams are online).

I would say that the wiring similarity would be dependent on the vintage of your current 6A box. You can go online to MSD and download PDF instructions on the new 6AL unit and compare the schematics.

They appear to be identical. I can't think of a reason for the external wiring to be different. The rev limiting feature would be entirely inside the MSD module.

talked with MSD tech last friday, and they confirmed that my harness connector from my 6A would plug right into a 6AL. I forgot to ask him where i should set the rev limiter.
Where would you set the Rev limit switches for a warmed up 440?     5500 - 6000 rpm?
I will probably get a 6AL ordered soon.

A safe place for stock is around 5500 rpm or even 5k if you want to be safe.

As Cryco said if you heartier components and they are balanced and stout you can go higher.

I believe I set mine to 6k but I believe my power will probably drop off before then, the proof will be in the dyno.
