Detecting exhaust manifold leak
« on: January 16, 2016 - 03:02:42 PM »
My 400-4 has developed and ticking noise, I think on the left side, and I think/hope its the manifold gasket. I have a hard time telling the difference between that and bad valve ticking. I tried tightening up a couple bolts that were maybe a ratchet click or two loose, but hasnt helped. Under #7 does this look like a leak? Any advice?

I had them also, take out the gasket and look at it, its usually visable on the gasket. There is probably some other tricks to find leaks also.

I've been using Percy's soft aluminum gaskets with very good results.     http://www.summitracing.com/parts/php-66036/overview/year/1972/make/dodge

My question is why are you using gaskets at all  the factory never did !
Just use a thin layer of high temp Ultra copper silicone & bolt it up , gaskets always cause the leaks

Thanks for the tips.
I will try without the gasket first and hopefully Ill be able to remove the 6 nuts and bolts without much trouble, though with my luck I know I'll probably break a stud or have some other issue.
Then I hope it fixes the problem. I still dont know for sure its not a valve or rocker noise of some sort.

If your planning on not using a gasket, take the manifolds to a machine shop to get resurfaced first.

I could see no gasket working on regular manifolds with a good sealer, but on headers?

I used remflex on my headers on the 440. So far they are good.
