7.25 rear axle
« on: January 17, 2016 - 05:00:03 PM »
yeah...that's what i have.
how much trouble is this going to cause in the future? i've just finally decided to hold onto all the original bits i have to work with (10" rear drums...converting to front discs...keeping my 14" rims with my 5x4 bolt pattern), but now i see my axle is a 7.25 and i don't see a lot of replacement parts (such as new gaskets) for this. do i just need to do my research or am i an idiot to not replace the shafts and differential.
my goal was to keep what i could and just clean it up and get it running. but the further i get into it, the more it seems like everything needs (or should be) upgraded. most of my budget is going to the front drum to disc conversion and exhaust.
it's not a daily driver project. just a restore for an occasional weekend drive. (and then probably sell)
i'm just not really sure the impact of this size axle so i'm looking for a little enlightenment.
thanks!

If it is not making any noise run it until it breaks  , meanwhile look for an 8 3/4 for it

LOL, My 2nd Challenger had a 225 slant 6, a 904 and a 7-1/4 rear end.  That thing ran very well.

Long story, cut short. I was 17 years old and driving with a friend. A highway patrol was on the side of the road with someone pulled over, trying to get another friend's Trans Am and my Challenger to pull over. Speed limit was 55, we were going 70, We PUNCHED IT to try to get away.

They came after me and 15 miles later it didn't end well. I had watched Vanishing Point too many times. Didn't know what I was thinking.

I put a 440, 727 and 8-3/4 in that car years later.  That 7-1/4 was still good when it went to the dump.

What started a 1 car MO State Highway Patrol chase ended with at least 5 chasing me before I pulled over after flipping a u-turn and seeing all of the cars behind me. I guess they don't have any action and having a chance to get in a chase had then coming from miles around. The adrenalin was going and all guns were drawn, since a trooper had been shot and killed a week before. Being a kid, having some understanding parents and a good lawyer got me out of the six tickets with a big fine and a slap on the wrist.

Never did THAT again.
