Newbie to Ebod's
« on: June 04, 2005 - 04:58:27 PM »
Just recently purchased a '73 Challenger with a 318, slap-stick auto. New to old-school cars, but not to working on cars. Still have a '99 Regal GS supercharged and did a lot of work to it. It runs mid 13's.

At any rate, I'm looking for some help and advice in a lot of areas. Any locals to me (Southeast MI) who would be willing to teach would be great! The Challenger has been repainted Go-Mango, not correct but looks d**n sharp. The guy that painted it would get a swift kick from me, because of his overspray but none the less.

Car probably sat for a long time, originally a Colorado car. So I changed oil, trans fluid and filter. Runs fairly good. Runs rich, so I changed plugs and adjusted the carb. But I'm used to fuel injection, working on a carb is nice, but I'm stuck as to how to dial it in. That and I've never dealt with timing an engine. I know, I know, I'm an amatuer. Learning is the key here. The other big deal for me is that it WAS a factory a/c car, but some previous owner obviously tore it out, which I believe is why the climate control(heater control?) has burned out. I'd like to get the factory air working again. But from the firewall into the engine bay there is nothing left of the system.

My first plan is to replace all the weatherstripping. I have a year one catalog, is that the best place to go for them? Other little items, needs an aftermarket radio system (the originals were in the trunk), new vinyl on the buckets, and a bunch of other stuff. In the future I'm thinking about beefing up the 318, I'm too poor to replace it. So I'll eventually need advice about it. Haven't read much here, just googled this place. Looking forward to a bunch of helpful information and maybe a couple of guys(gals) to go cruising and working on stuff with.

Thank you much.

Welcome to the forum Rizzy. I live a little west of Cleveland, so Im about 2 hours away from you. I too have a challenger, I am currently restoring it and will be painting it Go-mango(with gold pearl). If you have any questions or you need a specific picture of where stuff goes, then feel free to ask. Yearone will have everything you need, but you will be paying MSRP from them. I personally use eBay 90% of the time, its much cheaper but you have to be patient. I do use Yearone or the Paddock every once in a while, but its usually when they send me a 10/15% off coupon. Anyhow, enjoy the forum.....it has much to offer.....

Welcome to the board Rizzay!  You can learn a lot by reading through Chryco's tech section....the guy is a mopar genius!  Ask any question in there, and you'll get an answer.

You should know this up front...we are picaholics!!!  So, I know I speak for many here, we would LOVE to see your Challenger.  Sounds like she needs a little sprucing up (they all do!).

Again, welcome!

Welcome but...  :worthless:
If you want to learn about carbs it is worth it to buy a carb manual.I could give you a quick how to but reading a manual will give you a real understanding as to how they work and how to tune it.Do you have a Holley or Carter/Edelbrock?Do a search also as I`m sure there are threads in the tech section that may help.I have dealt a lot with Year One and they are good to deal with and have good customer service. You do pay a little more but I try and wait for those discount promotions to save a litltle.

As for the pics of the car, where is a good place to host photos? Digital Camera is already full of pics.

These Mopar magazines that you've spoke of, where can I find websites or phone numbers to subscribe to them?
And these a/c products, easy to fit? Anyone have any experience with the two companies?

Hey Rizzay!  To post pics, they need just need to be on your computer.  You can upload them from there by going to "Additional Options" under the text box of any message your replying to.  "Browse" your computer for the pic files and that's it.

As for magazines...here's a couple

http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/
http://www.moparcollectorsguide.com/

We just finished installing a Vintage Air unit.  They don't have a specific application for our e-bodies yet, so they offer a "universal" unit.  It does require some interesting challenges, but nothing that can't be overcome.

Hope this helps.
