70 Challenger SE Belt Molding Clips?? Can't source ...... Uggh!!
« on: January 19, 2016 - 06:40:23 PM »
I have been searching for over a year now for the clips that mount the belt molding to the top of the doors and the rear quarter beside the  glass.    I have a 70 Challenger "Western Sport Special" that was trimmed out with these belt moldings, but were off the car when I bought it.

This is typically found on the SE Challenger for 70 and 71.   I have tried RT Specialties, eBay, etc .....  but no luck.

Does anyone out there have any of these ..... or .... found a suitable replacement for mounting this rarely seen molding to the top of the door and in front of the rear side glass?

Thanks ... CHAPS!!

I guess that they aren't that rare, but it sure is frustrating when your car is finished, but with holes along the top of the door.  Wasn't aware of others in the same boat?

I was "hunting" the SE trim on top of the doors and quarter windows but when I couldn't find the hareware/clips I gave up looking . :-\

It appears that "Northland Fastener" may have what I need???    Still investigating ...... need to check the size of hole that the clip is
made for.   I don't want to have to enlarge the hole, but would rather modify the clip if not correct.   Will get back to everyone.

FYI. I ordered those exact clips from that particular seller and the "stem" portion on the clip that goes into the door was too big for the holes in the door. ( which is 1/4")
Spoke to seller ( in Florida). He said he didn't have the correct clips.
I suppose you could use them if you drill the holes in the doors larger,,,but I chose not to.

Chaps,,,,,I need them for my car as well,,,
I checked the northland site, looks like the right clip,,,,,but they don't comment on the "stem" size.  I might call them if you already haven't to see if they fit a 1/4 inch hole.
I might even consider ordering some and see if I can shave down the stem to make them work.

Hey Doug ..... I hear you on the holes size.    I contacted them this past week.   They are designed for 5/16" holes and up to 3/8".   My understanding is that the original holes are only a 1/4" for a screw in type stem.   When I questioned the hole size, he suggested that for a push in style clip, it should be a wider hole to secure a 1" trim.    I tend to agree with him, so given that we can't get the originals and it would be next to impossible to install with the glass in ..... I have ordered the clips on ebay from ALTHA3 as previously mentioned on one of the other responses.  The reason I am not ordering from Northland is that they want $6 per clip.  ALTHA3 are just under $8 for 12.  I plan to drill out the hole to 5/16" or maybe 11/32" if too tight, then paint the drilled holes with Zero-Rust to ensure no rust issues down the road.  My car is a resto mod of sorts ... .not a numbers matching rare car, so making a few of these mods to get it working is not going to de-value my car (originally a 318 automatic car).    What do you think??

Not sure if I am reading the website wrong on Northland.?...It mentions "Unit Package" of 5 ( quantity of 1 ) for $5.32
( I thought this meant one bag of 5 clips for $ 5.32 ) ?

I just returned 2 bags of clips from ALTHA3,,b/c they were too big for the hole size in the doors,,
I even sent him a old, original ( broken ) clip to see if he had anything that might work,,,never heard back,,,,so I think finding a original clip is going to be hard or impossible.

I still have a few original clips that I can show to someone that might be able to come up with something....

I don't want to drill the doors if i can help it ( car is all painted ), like you, mine is a 318 WSS ( but going for a R/T look ),,,so i don't have a issue with non-stock or modified stuff.

My glass is in already ( didn't anticipate running into problems with the clips,,,)

Between finding these clips or coming up with a solution,,,I am also having difficulty finding correct clips for the rear SE tail panel,,,( mine is on, but missing some clips,,,R/T specialities does not have them )

Let me know how it works out for you...

??? I understand Cuda doors also have this trim option ( not sure if it is the same ), but someone said they use a different style clip or even a plastic clip,,,,,,,wondering now if this is something that might work ??

Doug

Cuda trim is quite a bit narrower & the clips don't expand so they won't work....

I think using the clips you sent back & drilling the holes might be your best option... A little masking tape over the hole before you drill would protect the paint & brush touch the holes before installing the clips...
