T/A Information needed
« on: January 22, 2016 - 11:20:37 AM »
So I am planning on building a T/A clone - need some information

Yes I did a search but didn't find any complete listing of information dealing with the T/A challenger

I know the following parts are needed:

Rear Valance (no cut outs)
T/A Exhaust system
T/A style hood
Hood pins
Painted mirrors
Side T/A tape stripe
1/4 panel mounted antenna
Quick Ratio steering box / arms
340 Six Pack engine
Standard 15" steel wheels with optional Rallye Wheels

Questions:

Do any / all  T/As come with torque Boxes?
Do all t/As come with 3 speed wipers?
Confirm that T/As could not have wheel well moldings or sill moldings
Were the original torsion bars .96" ?
Staggered rear leaf springs? 6/7 leafs ?
Do all TAs come with power disc brakes?
Original sway bar diameters? (front and rear)

Planning on building a fairly original clone for the girlfriend.

Yes
Do all t/As come with 3 speed wipers?
No, rally dash optional, 3 speed came with rally dash
Confirm that T/As could not have wheel well moldings or sill moldings
Only the pilot T/As had wheel well moldings.  Not on the production cars.  I believe sill moldings were available as an option
Were the original torsion bars .96" ?
Don't know offhand
Staggered rear leaf springs? 6/7 leafs ?
I believe that is true
Do all TAs come with power disc brakes?
Yes
Original sway bar diameters? (front and rear)
Don't know offhand
BTW, fast ratio steering was an option, T/As were built with manual steering, power steering, and power fast ratio steering

All T/A's also had 11" rear drum brakes....
All T/A's used 1970 B Body lower shock mounting plates...
Torsion bars are the same as any 340/383 E Body .90
All T/A's had a rear sway bar .75 same as all E bodies
All T/A's used a heavier .94 front sway bar

Would the 2-speed wiper motor fit with the 6-pack air filter setup? I do know that it will not work with A shaker setup! :dunno:

Here is a rear spring pack off my T/A. Looks like four springs with a half spring the bottom.

Thanks for all the info ---

So standard Rallye suspension is what the T/A came with...     ok - easy.

Just read the press TSB for the T/As over on Hamtrack Historical...         it curiously doesnt list anything regarding cooling system. I assume HD cooling with a thermostatic fan drive, 7 blades, and 26" radiator ?

T/A and AAR torsion bars were larger... 0.92 diameter... they were the SAME as used on all Hemi e-bodies and 440-6 e-bodies (and ONLY came on these indicated cars).   These TBs at 0.92 diameter are weak by modern handling standards of today (even yester-year).... If you're willing, consider at least 1.12 or larger... you won't regret it (contact Firm Feel)... (I run 1.24 diameter TBs... it'll be one of the best suspension improvements you can make... while your at it.... (1.12 aren't that stiff at all, but help tremendously with handling).

This is incorrect information. T/A's and AAR's used 779/778 torsion bars which measure .90" and are the same as any 340 or even 383 E Body, from the factory. :2cents:

Regarding the T/A TBs... I've read it in a few different places that they were the same size and part numbers as the Hemi and 440-6 cars.... I've checked many years ago into the OE parts books that the TBs were the same.   It would further make sense as the T/A and AAR cars were to have better suspension setups (ie: stiffer) for their intended purpose of road handling.  There are current articles on the web that calls out the TBs as being the 0.92 (Hemi-4406) SIZE on the T/A and AAR factory cars.  Essentially, they started out as Hemi-4406 chassis (ie: rear torque boxes added).... rear leafs changed to the high-arch leafs (for "tire/muffler clearance"), and p/discs up front with the larger rear drums, rear antenna (with fiberglass hood), and misc other specific items.   That's been my understanding.
