Steering Box

I have a few leaks on my steering box I need to fix can it be removed from the bottom without tearing everything off around it? It looks like it should drop out.

I have a 383 with stock exhaust manifolds and it will drop out the bottom. Loosen the three bolts and with a little rotation it will drop out. I've replaced mine from the bottom. Be careful it is heavy.
Might have issues if you have headers. I'm sure someone with headers will have info for you.

In the Cuda with a 340 and manifolds it will drop right out.  The Charger with a 440 and headers is a pain.  I need to loosen the headers, jack up the motor and even then its a tight fit to get the box out.  I'm planning to order a Stage III from FF and not looking forward to this job.

Thanks for the info guys, it sounds like I shouldn't have any trouble with mine since it's a 360 with stock exhaust.  :2thumbs:

I changed the steering box and pump on my car, set everything up exactly as it was but now I have a little bit of wondering back and forth in the steering. I saw someplace that the steering shaft hole had to be 13/16 away from the top of the coupling and that if it wasn't it could be an issue? I don't see how it could be since it slides up and down inside of the coupling. My coupling is tight (shoes seem fine) but there seems to be play in the box if the car is not running and the column is not locked when I turn it by hand on the shaft. When I start the car almost all of it goes away except maybe 2 degrees of the play, any suggestions on why I would have the play or wondering now? I would sure think that the new rebuilt box would be tight but then who knows about companies anymore. I got the box from OReillys it's a Master Pro.

My first thought was you may have put the steering coupler back together with the shoes 90* out. The play you see with the engine off is normal, at least that is how my steering box works as well. A stage 2 box.
I would start the car and have someone move the wheel and see if the new box is the issue. Sometimes remans are not done well.

It's in the box where the play is, in the manual there are 5 things it says it can be so I will start with the cross shaft adjustment and go from there. Just curious if anyone else had the same issue and it was an easy fix. Thanks for the info.

Nope not the self steering issue, everything works perfect except there is play or a looseness of a few degrees. Not fun at 80 and above.  :burnout:
