Convert carport to garage

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you have ever had a carport turned into a garage. My main question is the cost, I have somemoney set aside for this but was curious about what others paid for similar work.

My carport is decent size for one car  and I would love to be able to leave my tools out there instead of dragging them in and out...one of my spare bedrooms is currently a tools and random parts room.

I don't know the rules where you live but I have a neighbor that converted his carport in the 70's, recently the house was sold, turns out he had no permit & no inspections were done... The garage had to be torn down..... Not cool.. So just consider yourself warned..

If you're out in the country you may be okay. Once you go in to a government office to check you're kind of screwed and they'll probably show up and make your life miserable. That's how it is up here anyway. Other alternative is to sheet it in pretty quick so no one is the wiser. The first house I bought had a double carport that had been framed, insulated and sheeted in by a P.O. I then poured a concrete floor and wired it up. It was a good building and I had no second thoughts about it, however if it ever burns down or collapses insurance will never cover it.

I'm in the city unfortunately and I would be using a contractor.....My vast knowledg starts and ends with cars lol

When I lived in Florida I converted my carport into a garage for the very same reasons that you want to do yours. I bought the garage door and a couple of windows out of the "Thrifty Nickel" to keep the costs down. I think the only thing I bought brand new other than hardware was the back door. Doing all of the work myself I think I did the whole thing for around $1,200 bucks. With a contractor doing the work for you I would say it can probably be done today for $5,000 or so.

I wish I could do it myself but I don't have any significant knowledge in this area and I'm worried that if I try I'll mess it up and end up costing more than it would have to begin with....kinda like working on a car after an idiot lol

But if I could all the savings would go to challenger parts.

I was hoping to do it for around $4,000.

Are you able to use the existing roof, that will save money.
Planning to do this at my new property soon.
My roof may be too low for garage door.

Yea I think the roof is fine. The opening for the carport is over 10ft tall

Is the carport attached to the side of the home?

With the height of the two bays, and the amount of concrete it looks like you will need, you will be lucky to get it completed in the 5K range.

And I'm guessing this this just needs to be framed out with studs every 16in and remove the diagonal boards to make it a wall?

Yeah, just frame out the one wall, put a window in it for sure.

You might have to frame out the front of the car port space to match your soffit overhang to get your car to fit inside the car port.  As it appears from the pictures.

I renig on what I said. You can definitely get this done under 5K. 

If your around any large city, you can call your garage door companies and ask for a used door in great shape. Often times you can find a great door for super cheap. 
Same with the window.   Simple flanged vinyl windows are replaced all the time.  For the use of a garage a used one will work perfect.

I'm near two of the largest cities in  upstate SC so that sounds great. I didn't know you could get a used door from them.

if you have a friend or two that work in the trades you could bang that out in a weekend.  check with your local habitat for humanity and see if they have a resale store where people donate bldg. supplies for your side wall window.  You could grab a 7' overhead door from H D or lowes and install it at the same time.  Four of us framed in, siding, new roof and 2 overhead doors my brother in laws 2 bay carport in a weekend, complete with landscaping.  Looked like it was always there and no one ever caught it.
