Leave the original color? Too hard to decide
« on: January 30, 2016 - 12:01:55 PM »
Hello out there.  This is my first post.  Brand new.  Bought a 73 Cuda this past summer for 20K.  Driveline all done.  Interior nice. Very little rust.  CA car. Underside looked so nice I had to buy the car.  Its a real Cuda.  Needs a paint job.  Its an original basin street blue car.  I LIKE the color, but I dont LOVE it.  I have read there were a lot of 73 basin street blue cudas.  Its a 1973 340, but not numbers matching engine.  Basically its no super rare ride.

I plan to keep the car for a very long time.  Really like the car.  Here is my problem.  AM I AN IDIOT if I paint it Winchester grey GA4 (I LOVE this color) or something other than the original color?  I will have 38k into the car as I am uptight person and want to replace a lot of items and go down the media blasting path as I have a guy that will work with me, I do some of the work and he does the rest.

I am not a car show guy, just want to drive around with my son and have fun with the car.  Any advice would be appreciated.  THANKS.

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Mark 8:36

Winchester grey GA4 with the black stripe IS the best color in '73 IMO and always seem to go for more money on Eblah. So it does increase the value and improve the look IF the car started out brown, tan or green like so many did in '73. For example, when I build my Sahara beige '73 Barracuda there is no way I'm going back to tan

That being said you shouldn't change a Basin Street blue car.  They are common for E bodies in '73 for some reason but not common at all including all other years and models. Anyone in the know loves Petty blue!!!

Oh and welcome by the way!!  I also have a Basin street blue '73 340 Barracuda. Not a 'CUDA but kinda strange option wise with the auto selector on the tree and a bench seat.  It's sleeping right now.....

Colour change is a big deal to some, me included. My rule of thumb is, these cars look great in any colour so why not paint it it's original colour? We all build them to keep them forever but things happen and if you go to sell it, a lot of people will not consider a colour changed ca.  An original 1 or 2 barrel car I might colour change but when it was originally a 4 barrel up to 8 barrel car I think stock colour is a no brainer.

You do realize that you've put your finger on a VERY tender spot here, right? LOL! You'll get as many opinions as answers, but at the end of the day, it's YOUR car and you should do what YOU want to! PS- welcome to the site! Glad to hear you're involving your boy in the hobby, great stuff that he'll remember the rest of his life.

Thanks everyone.  I will wait until this summer to paint.  By then I will either love the blue or be ready for something else.  Thanks a lot.  Will consider your advice/opinions.

Agree about it being your car, so make it what you want. My 73 was the same color, like you I didn't hate it but definitely didn't love it therefore it had to go. If I was doing the car to resell, then I might have retained the Basin blue (probably not, but...). If the car was a survivor or even a numbers matching car, I "might" retain the color, however since none of these conditions exist, I would absolutely change the color. I think you know the right answer as you described the gray as a color you "love". Better to have a car you look at and love virtually every respect than one you like most everything but the one thing every one sees first and foremost. You will constantly be telling people how you "like' the blue but would rather have it in gray. At this point in time, so long as the paint job doesn't suck, value should not be an issue.

But again, your car, your money.

Welcome to the forum. I'm not an all original numbers guy. But, there are only three cars I wouldn't change, a 44 six pack, a Hemi or a AAR, T/A car. When you bought a new car back then the options list was so long you almost never saw two cars exactly the same. The point is, these cars were meant to be built according to the owners personal taste. So my vote is make, your car they way you like it.

Great color whichever you choose, I would probably keep original for a while the possibly change Winchester gunmetal grey.

make the car how you want it..its not a matching number car... a color change really isnt going to matter that much anyway...I took my 72 yellow rally 340 4 speed car and am making a 70 ta clone...it will still be yellow only because Im making a Emax clone.....I did not have the original motor/trans/no build sheet or fender tag.....Im making it how I want it!!
