1970 440 Challenger Trans Swap
« on: February 02, 2016 - 04:22:04 PM »
Hello everyone! I'm new to the site and hope I can find some help. I've got a 1970 challenger with the 440 with the A727 auto. I'm looking at putting 3.91s in it but after a friend of mine ran the numbers, I'm not liking the idea of 3500 rpm at 70mph. Looking for suggestions and tips on a possible transmission swap. Right now I'm thinking either the A518 or A833 just don't know how difficult it would be to go from auto to manual? Also, I'm unsure as far as how easily there options will play with 440 and E body. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

it isn't that hard to go from AT to MT, especially with the kits available from Brewers or Passion. Definitely takes some fabrication to a small degree but nothing that is crazy.
Current Mopar
70 Challenger RT 440-6 EFI, 73 Cuda 416-6 EFI
05 Hemi Durango, 01 Ram 4x4, 14 Ram 2500 4X4, 10 PCP Challenger 6 spd RT, 01 Viper GTS ACR, 52 B3B w/330 Desoto Hemi, 70 Hemi RR (under const)
Past Mopars
9 x Challengers. AAR Cuda, 4 RR, 2 GTX, 4 Chargers, etc... (too many to list)

First of all, welcome for CO to one of the best sites for e-bodies.  A LOT of knowledge and friendly guys to help here.

You need to ask yourself do you want an auto or manual? Huge difference and the cost of just all the parts are about $4500-5000 for an A-833 4 spd depending on what you want.  Contact Brewers for more information  http://www.brewersperformance.com/

If you want to stick with the 727, you can switch out your gears to 3.55 or 3.23 (more highway but less off the line).  Least expensive choice and will lower your RPM.

Another alternative is stay with your current set up and add a Gear Vendors overdrive.  https://www.gearvendors.com/cgi-bin/shop/search.cgi?1.+MANUFACTURER=DODGE&2.+VEHICLE+TYPE=CAR&3.+MODEL=CHALLENGER&4.+YEAR=1970&5.+TYPE=STOCK&6.+FUEL+TYPE=GAS&7.+WHEEL+DRIVE=REAR+WHEEL+DRIVE&8.+TRANSMISSION+TYPE=AUTOMATIC&9.+TRANSMISSION+MODEL=3-SPEED+727+18%22+TAILHOUSING&submit.x=16&submit.y=7&submit=GO   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SywsCGnoXOU

I would go manual with 833 OD or Passon 855 .
518 is a great choice if you are OK with auto

I'm doing something similar. I'm considering this:
http://americanpowertrain.com/i-22339177-mopar-automatic-overdrive-kit-b-and-e-body.html
The only problem I see with it is the lack of a factory looking console shifter that allows all 4 gears to be select manually.
It also does not require a computer box, nice.

I was also reading the latest Mopar Muscle and they did a story on new stuff from SEMA. They mentioned a new one from Gear Venders that is 10 inches shorter than the current one they sell.
I have not seen anything on their website yet but I'm waiting until I hear more about it.
