'71 Challenger not a Downward Spiral
« on: February 04, 2016 - 12:57:51 PM »
Hi All,
Picked up a '71 Challenger few months back and it's finally time to undergo some changes.
A quick little back history; my wife and I have wanted a 'muscle car' for awhile but we've always had a Jeep and that consumed a ton of time and money. Got a fair offer on it (never thought I would sell the darn thing) and away it went. I went a total of 3 or so weeks with hardly any sleep wondering what the heck I was going to do. We were initially looking for major project. Something we could build to be our own. I did that with the Jeep, it was back-halved, on D60s front and rear, caged, etc. I can post some photos if you folks are interested in that. I am surely not afraid to dig into a project. Yet after looking over some cars that needed a bunch of work and then adding up the cost of replacement panels I began wondering if it was better to get something that had the body "done". Similar, if not less, money and I could drive it while making changes.

I stumbled on this car from the south and made a decent deal on it. No rust is a huge plus.
It was originally a 318 / 904 car now with a 383 / 727. Someone put a 9 1/4 under it from, what I think, a c body so it is a bit wide. Also has some dinky 205s on it.

Plans are big (aren't they always?!) but to start:
- New Grant 246 wheel (got it)
- Shifter from quapman (got it)
- Seatbelts. None in the car but the driver’s side has a lap belt. Need to find the location of the shoulder belt weldnut in the roof.
- Gauges, oil pressure works! Probably new units from SpeedHut
- +1" springs from ESPO (got them) to replace the old worn ones. Got to acquire some offset mounts or build them.
- .96” Mopar t-bars (got them) to replace the stock 318 units
- Shocks, still working on which ones, maybe RideTech RQs?
- Swap that 9 1/4 rear axle out. A great friend of mine hooked me up with an 8 3/4 from a b body. So I have an empty housing and an empty 489 case. I'm up in the air to what I should do, build out the 8 3/4 or just suck it up and get a D60. The bonus is I have all the parts to build a D60 (setup bearings, shims, yada yada) but finding one isn't easy nor is paying for a new unit from someplace like Strange. The 8 3/4 is probably cheaper, can’t be any harder to setup than a D60, and fine with a 383 even if it gets a bit more hot. Or am I nuts?
- New wheels and tires, would like at least 285s out back and 235/245s up front. Probably 17" for the wheels.
- Engine - we'll leave that to later but the Edlebrock 1406 carb on it now needs a tune or a swap for a Holley. She runs a little rich. Any advice would be helpful here, it is my first carb motor.

As for the title name, I had my Jeep called 'Downward Spiral' because every time we did something to it we used the "well while we have it apart / or while we are in there" and things sometimes got out of hand.

On to the pics:
(Yes, I am aware the strips are wrong for a '71 and was initially going to change them but now they've grown on me.)

Nice car. As for the spiral, pretty much everyone on here has the same issue; I call it mission creep. Start out to do one thing, then while you are there you see something else and before you know it, the car is all a part in the garage and you are wondering how you got there. Been there done that far too many times but the end result is worth it.

Nice!  Wish something like that would get in my way so I could "stumble" over it!
Cheers!

I like that. "Mission Creep".  :ylsuper:
For sure the end result is always worth it.

Well lots of nights scouring the classifieds and ~2600 miles with the truck and trailer later. I guess in fairness it wasn't so much a 'stumble' after all.

Great looking car. I especially like the clean, basic stock looks of the engine compartment.   :2thumbs:   Appears to be an A/C car, any plans on getting cold air. ??    :rebel:

Yeah I figured that statement would resonate with many on here. Last year I decided to do a little "clean up" on my 70 Challenger. 4 months later I had repainted the engine compartment, trunk, door jambs and behind the grille. I had also installed a new stereo with amp and speakers, had ordered and installed all new "correct" fasteners in the grille, front and rear valances, refaced the gauge cluster, built a new gauge cluster, repaired the drivers side door handle, adjusted the drivers door window, installed a new FF stage 3 box with FR pitman arm and idler arm, installed new Schumacher tri Y headers, cleaned up the engine compartment wiring, replaced the upper radiator hose, remounted the front spoilers, and installed H4 and H1 headlights with relays.

Like pulling a thread on a sweater....

Well some updates...
Another friend of mine tipped me off to a Dana that was being used under a street Jeep. I went and checked it out, sure enough it is a '68-69 b body Dana 60.  :cooldancing:
Got a very decent deal on it since it did need some saving and work done. This axle has had an interesting life for sure. I was able to find 4 different paint colors, black, yellow, red and green on it. Someone also went a bit crazy with the torch but nothing I wasn't able to fit with a welder (needed new mounts anyway). Happy to save the diff before it got beat up under a Jeep being dragged over rocks.

I got the 9 1/4, springs and shackles out. Mocked up the new ESPO +1" springs, Dr. Diff's 1.5" relocation hangers and shackles. I may need to clearance the support on the rear valance a little, we'll see better when I get some weight on it. I'm not sure what made me do it but I pushed up on one of the shocks and it stayed up. I had to pull it back down. :eek7: So I also picked up some Hotchkis Fox shocks for all 4 corners. This thing better handle better now!

For axle parts while Cass was sending me the relocation kit I also had him send me his 11.7" Mustang Cobra setup, along with all new brakelines front to rear, 35 spline axles, bearings, distro block, 1350 yoke, cables, studs, etc . Looks good, hopefully get the axle together shortly.

Dana all cleaned up, welded new mounts on, and ready for gears (upside down in picture and before I spent hours final cleaning it).

I geared it this weekend. I used a TrueTrac and 3.54s. I must say I was a bit disappointed that the Motive gears I picked up didn't have the pinion offset from nominal marking. They always did in the past when I used them in Jeeps but this set didn't. No huge deal, but it would have been nice to save some initial setup time.

Oh, and I picked up a Mopar pie plate so now the engine has a little more bling too.
