Thanks folks.  It finally feels like progress. I’m still trying to line-up a body/paint guy and have some panel work to be done but I’m specifically looking to decide what to do on the fenders and driver door.  I’d appreciate feedback on whether to repair or replace, keeping in mind that this is not a high-end restoration. 
The driver door has minor dings like from a parking lot and the frame of the door is solid.
The passenger fender has deep pits underneath near the headlight can.  I’m concerned that the fender can’t be repaired fully and will eventually rust through. 
The driver fender has a through hole with deeply pitted rust and through hole on the fender brace.  I know that there is a patch panel for this but is it worth it when paying for the repair versus a complete new fender?

Looks repairable to me, I would keep all the original steel you can. They sell patches for the lower part of the fender.

New panels have an attraction if you can afford them, however I will say up front that while the steel will be new, it will never fit as well as what you have. I replaced complete rear quarters, 1 door skin and both fenders because I had no choice. I spent a lot of time making it fit and if you are going to pay someone to fit the panels and paint the car, it could be more expensive than repairing what you have. that said, good research and thinking it through it worth the time to determine the best course of action.

Thanks.  I remember your struggles with the fender.  I'm thinking that I'll stick with the original.  I won't be tackling it but the area of most concern is that passenger front contour with the pitted rust. I suspect an expert can fabricate the patch that better than I.  I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for the input.

I'm not a body man, but I would think a good body man could fix those issues.  I know mine could as I've seen him work miracles on mine and other cars.  I agree you want to stay with the original panels if possible.  Good luck.

Okay I finally finished cleaning the undercoating from the fenders, header and front spoiler.  Good news in that the damage is limited to the fender braces of both fenders.  That passenger fender pitting was resolved with a wire brush and the urethane primer.  I’ve also coordinated with a body guy to bring this into final paint so I’m going to roll with the original metal.

I've sent the rolling chassis for final metal prep and bodywork/paint.  I have a question on how folks deal with the nomenclature plate on the driver door.  How do your restore, protect or replace this plate?

They are reproduced now (I believe ECS does it), however I have always taped them off carefully.

Take a photo of the VIN decal and send it to ECS, They will make one that matches perfectly for you.

I am having difficulties doing the final alignment of the quarters to the taillight panel and filler piecs.  I'm wondering if I installed the taillight panel correctly.  I replaced it like the original but I had not installed the trunk pan.  It seems strange that there would be a seam on the outside of the car.  Can anyone confirm that the taillight panel sits inside the trunk pan lip extension?

My trunk pan lip is on the outside of the tail panel, with seam sealer covering the lip. Mine is also eaten away from the moisture/salt that stays under the lip of the trunk pan. I'll be replacing the trunk pan lip eventually.

I painted tail panel 1 year ago and got a couple of pix, so you can see where mine is eaten away.

Previous owner's home made tips are finally replaced with correct ones on new 2 1/2" exhaust installed this summer.

Thanks.  Do you have a 1972 bumper?  And, what paint did you use for the tail panel, flat, satin or that Organsol?
