70-72 vs 73-74 e-body spindles
« on: June 06, 2005 - 05:43:39 AM »
Been reading many how-to's on upgrading to disc brakes.  They all say to get spindles from 73-74 e-body or 73-76 a-body.

What is the difference between a 70-72 e-body disc spindle and 73-74 e-body?  And how do I tell the difference?

Part numbers don't work, all the castings are long gone on these parts.

Thanks

70-72 brakes use the cross pins , the rotors are very hard to get   compared to the later ones but the brakes work well from any year

Sorry, but I don't understand

What are cross pins?  I understand there are 2 piece and 1 piece cast rotors.

What is the difference in the spindles between 70-72 and 73-74?

Katfish,
I was kinda down this road before. I believe Chryco is talking about the 4 bolts that hold the 70-72 calipers together. The bolts run right thru the brake pads. I happen to have to 1 piece calipers on my 70 Challenger. Donated from some mid-70 A-body. The pads just kind of sit in there, nothing holding them in place. Hope this helps.

the calipers are mounted on 2 crosspins
the spindle is defferent because of the samller diameter of the smaller brg , I need to look into a crossover brg so the later rotor can be used on the smaller early spindle

Thanks,

Now that I know the bearing size is smaller, it makes sense.  All the how to's explain the caliper and rotor differences and why.  I have yet to see any explaination on the spindle reasoning.
