shades of yellow 1970 cuda?
« on: February 06, 2016 - 11:22:47 PM »
Needs new paint.  My tag shows FY1.  I understand this was Lemon Twist - a high impact color option?

I am unclear about the options for yellow.  I would have said this was a faded yellow, not very bright.  I really don't love this color.  Is there a brighter yellow for that year?
Is there a photo gallery here to compare the colors?
Any threads you can refer me to someone else thinking about warming up this color?
The car is currently red, which must be removed.
Here are  some old pics of the original yellow.

I'm not a yellow fan but FY1 looks nice and "crisp" when it is fresh, you could do much worse. It's the only yellow available for 70. It is faded in those photos, much nicer when fresh.

This is exactly what my car looked like new.  Didn't seem to bother me back then.

So the second picture (brighter) is a custom color?

Anyone here done this similar color change?
Not asking about comments on value or restoration.

Thanks

there should be a more fades sunfire yellow & a cream color available in 70  so Lemon twist was the best choice , 71 has Curious Yellow available which is my favorite . It is your car so the options are unlimited find a yellow you like or have a custom color mixed

Yes, I was hoping to stay in the ballpark of the FY1 so it won't bug me if I were to see some of the original color remaining in places I won't be painting, like inside the doors, or deep in the truck, etc.

That is a very nice & bright yellow you have there, too much for what I am looking for though.

I'll look into the Curious yellow for '71.

Thanks

FY1 when it's fresh especially in a modern BC/CC finish has allot of pop... Ten-twenty year old single stage acrylic enamel that hasn't been really well cared for is gonna look pale & dull... Talk with your painter, he can start with FY1 & tweak the toners slightly so the color looks right but has just a touch more pop...

Yes, thats pretty much what I'm asking for.

Thanks for all the comments.  I will still watch this thread.

This is what I'm looking for.  Could this be a toner tweaked FY1?

Thats an advertising shot so it started as FY1 but advertising likes things that grab attention so tweaking the toners is a good way to do that.... FWIW back in the 70's I tried to buy touch up paint for my FK5 burnt orange Challenger & the touch up didn't even come close to matching... Talked to the Rep @ the paint store & he said Ditzier showed 18 alternates for FK5, same code, slightly different colors... Tell your painter what you want & ask him to do a few spray outs....  Spray outs are test sprays with slightly different color variations... You can get just what your looking for...

I'm shooting some FY1 right now and there's a lot of different shades depending on the brand you pick.  The color can also change a lot based on how many coats you put on.  And some of the codes for FY1 still use lead pigments.  The lead paints cover a lot better, but really getting hard to find.  Like previous suggested, just do some test spray outs.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.
