Brake fluid on paint !!
« on: February 07, 2016 - 04:20:41 PM »
Have the race car on the lift and my 69 Charger under it.  Notice some "fluid " on the hood of the charger and find my master cylinder was leaking from the race car and dripped on the hood of the Charger below.
I wiped if off. Tried cleaning it with some soap and water and when it dries I now have a nice white cloudy look to the paint. AARRGGHHHHHH

Any way to make it better ? ( other than painting the hood )

Not sure how long the brake fluid had been sitting there but I hadn't checked on the car in a few weeks.

Any thoughts.

What a bummer. What type of paint? single stage or base clear?  single stage is more porous than B/C so the break fluid has probably already started to break down the paint, if that is the case there will be no saving it.

brake fluid is hydroscopic, so soapy water should break it down.  clean the area very well and give it a good coat of wax.

Hood is actually a 6 pak fiberglass hood that was painted organisol black.
I think it's toast but will try some more soap and water.

That may actually be a break.....if it lefts the paint, all you will have to do is repaint the hood.

However, since there is very little hardener in orangisol it will absorb very easily into paint and cause it to left.

what kind of fluid; Dot 3, 4, 5? If the paint isn't soft and spongy or visibly lifting you might get away with neutralizing it with soap and water (I would use dish soap with a degreaser in it). If it is solid (as in not lifting) you might just have to fog it in with a color that matches.

I would replace the race car fluid with dot 5 (silicon) it's not hard on paint. You probably need to put a blanket on the bottom car to keep any other fluids off of it.

I did that on mine.  It is a process to switch them out, but you don't have to worry about it getting on painted surfaces.
