Idler arm issues
« on: February 09, 2016 - 11:56:28 AM »
I recently ordered an idler arm for my 70 Challenger, a Moog piece.  The bushing end looks much different than my old one. The old one has the cup style washers where the arm fit into the K member,  this one just has the steel shaft with no washers on the ends. When installed, there is an excessive amount of play. Not up-and-down on the bolt, but as if the bushing itself was worn. It's very noticeable driving and also when I jack up the passenger wheel and move it back and forth. It's definitely the idler arm...I can see it pivoting. Has anyone else ran into this?  Any recommendations on a different company for a more factory style arm?  I apologize if this is a duplicate post, I tried to post this with pictures before and it didn't work. Thanks

Yes, K7041. Maybe I got a lemon. I guess I'll try and replace it. What throws me is, It fits properly, but the movement is certainly not right. Have you seen the style I'm referring to vs the original style I removed? It seems like the style I purchased without the built in "washers" is a bad design. But if it works for everyone else, maybe I just got a crummy one...

Update with a pic of new one prior to installation maybe a side by side of new and questionable one.

Same part...same style.....same problem! Still has a .5" of movement. For some reason I can't post pictures. Either way, I put 3 washers with the same I.D. as the bolt shaft on the top, and two on the bottom which firms it up, sigh. It works, but it still isn't right. At least I can drive my car in a straight line now lol. I'm surprised no one else has experienced this. I have two K members and the fitment is identical on both, so it doesn't seem to be a bracket issue. I'm definitely buying the other style they make. Here are links to the two styles, the first is the moog I bought, and the second is the style that came off the car originally. http://m.summitracing.com/parts/mog-k7041

There could be a mis-package... but... did you consider the Firm Feel Idler Arm Ball Bearing setup?   This should take up any excess tolerance and improve the free motion of the idler arm.
Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!

Did you install the one from Rare Parts?  I had the same problem with a Moog from a few years ago and currently use a few washers as spacers as you tried.  It works but I don't like the set up like that.
