Bullet Exhaust
« on: February 12, 2016 - 05:00:30 PM »
I'm installing a bunch of Hotchkis suspension equipment on my '70 Barracuda that currently has the AAR exhaust system.  Since the car will be lower, I would like to switch this out for a more space saving straight through bullet type muffler that will be closer to the floor but still retain the AAR side exhaust tip.  Does anyone have recommendations or experience with this type of muffler?

My car is getting the same muffs as Don's. I like the sound. His car sounds fantastic.

I love the sound too!!!

I painted them with red engine paint to look like cherry bombs from the 70/80's!

These came highly recommend from street/strip guys I know that's why I didn't go with real cherry bombs.

I went back and listened to the video of your burnout Don and those sound sweet!  A reputable exhaust shop here recommended the Magnaflow Magnapacks https://www.magnaflow.com/products?partNumber=10416&searchTerm=10416

I'm also having them do an x-pipe and relocate the mount for the tips as it is incorrectly mounted now on the pinch weld.  I should have it done by the end of this week and will post pics and videos.

I went with an X-Pipe as well.  I think it all worked out well.

Cudos to My friend Randy Smith for his quailty job in fabrication. He gave Don exactly what he wanted while we stood there and waited. The price was small town local as well. Some people around here do not consider themselves a heart transplant doctor prices. They are super in price and pro's at what they do.

Yeah, I budget amlost twice the price I paid to get it all done.  I took him three inch tube, x-pipe and muffs and I'm sure I got the "you know Alan Lemon" price but I have to say I would gladly take my car back there for any type of welding work.  Exceptional work IMO.

Looks really clean Don.  While I like the side exhaust because it is different and goes with the AAR theme of my car, it sure has its challenges.  I will post pics of mine when it is finished.

Got the x-pipe and magnaflow bullets in today.  They had to custom bend the pipes to S around the frame rail to match up with the side exhaust.  The installed a primary exhaust mount off the frame rail and secondary on the tips. I should have a little more Hp with straight through bullets now instead of those restrictive AAR mufflers, and more torque with the X-pipe.  Plus it it A LOT cleaner look from the rear too.

  NICE!!

I noticed that you did not have subframe connectors on there.....If you are going with the hotchkis subframe connectors, that might cause you issues??....I was told they hang really low...from what I understand they  flattened out the ta exhaust and in a few pics had more of a boomtube flat muffler to compensate???

There is no way that I can see to add subframe connectors since the 2 1/2" pipe runs right in front of the frame rail.  I have approx 6" clearance on the tips and cannot figure out a way with out bending them up or going with taller tires to get more.  I'm not sure what the clearance was on the AARs or T/As originally.

Also, with the primary mount for the exhaust attached to my frame rail and secondary off the tip there is no rattling and it still looks stock from the side.

Yes, Hotchkis subframe connectors hang really low, and the couple of guys on here that installed them commented they don't like that feature.  I talked to Hotchkis and they initially had the AAR/T/A exhaust below their subframe connectors, then customized the exhaust to be a boom tube type with a muffler that has an inlet and a 90 degree outlet to the custom built flat tip.  I also looked at boom tubes and called Dr. Gas.  My first concern is that they are VERY LOUD according to Dr. Gas.  They also said you would have to cut into the boom tube muffler/tips to get them to fit with a subframe.
