Corrosion
« on: February 12, 2016 - 06:15:57 PM »
Put a new zinc anode in my water pump housing a year ago. Pulled it
out for inspection today. Still corrodes pretty bad, even though I had extra corrossion inhibitor and have the battery
disconnected most the time. I also went to a closed coolant system with expansion overflow
bottle, thinking less air in system, but still getting similar results.  At least this means the iron block or aluminum
is not corroding. These are about $20 at Summit.

Ya, looked into those a few years ago. For some reason
they were not recommended for cars.  Maybe because
they were designed for salt water.

Very good Cudabob496! I remember discussing this issue with you. You definitely have some electrolytic action going on there! The good news is the zinc has been deteriorating (sacrificial anode)saving some expensive base metals ( like cylinder heads etc.) This is what you want to see. You should be able to find a replacement Zinc anode w/o the brass plug for around $4. Let me know if you need a supplier.

Will do. Gonna replace this one in about a year.  I cleaned it up, and it has lost about 20% of the zinc.
Wish I had used these from the get-go!

Be sure to look for a mil-spec zinc as they are not all the same.

Isolate the bolts on your radiator with rubber bushings.

That should help if you are getting electrical current flowing through your coolant.

Can't hurt. But that big iron block that is grounded with a large strap to the frame is probably
what's really gettin me.

Tell yourself that all you want, at the end of the day they are both zinc, they are both sacrificial anodes & they both do the same thing... Sacrificial Anodes are created from a metal alloy with a more negative electrochemical potential than the other metal it will be used to protect. And zinc fills that bill quite well....

I agree, zinc is zinc, but it's what other people were telling me. But I will look into it again.

That's what I did , went to my local West Marine boat supply and bought a few. Cheap insurance.   I installed mine in the aluminum rad, if that makes a difference?  :dunno:

Anywhere you have a threaded port is fine.... And in the lower tank is ideal....

My rad is a cross flow and I welded a bung to act as a drain plug and use the anode as the drain plug.   :icon16:
