My rad is a cross flow and I welded a bung to act as a drain plug and use the anode as the drain plug.   :icon16:

wonder if it makes a diff where the zinc is placed? radiator or engine block.
Its all connected by water, but the block with the big ground strap may see more
current across it?

Bur an Aluminum radiator has more negative electrochemical potential so it's more reactive & likely needs more protection...

I'm thinking the engine may need more, since it has 60 lbs of aluminum heads on it

Ya, apparently, when they crud-up/scale-up, the pure zinc is restricted from
doing the best job possible.  Think I'll just put in a brand new one.

Guess I'll go with Model E-0 at boatzincs.com.

So then why is it current new cars with aluminum radiators aren't having this problem?
Because the radiator is isolated from ground or positive?

Purple Ice and some others say not to use distilled or de-ionized water as it will draw replacement ions out of the surrounding passages and increase corrosion.

Others say to use it.

The zinc anode must be connected electrically to the base metal to work (we are making a battery).

Ya, I assumed without the brass fitting, the zinc rod would lay on the bottom, and have decent contact?
I may throw one in there, and fish it out in a year to see how it looks. But will also install the regular
one with the brass fitting in my water pump housing.

these are 14 psi and have a magnesium anode, which will wear quicker I think.
I need a 16 psi with zinc anode
