70 BARRACUDA WATER PUMP LONG BOLTS WONT THREAD **HELP**
« on: February 14, 2016 - 10:57:51 AM »
I appreciate y'alls replies to my other post., thanks a bunch.

UPDATE: I tried adding the coolant stop leak yesterday and damn near had her licked, however, there was one pesky area at the bottom of the WP, dripping down onto the harmonic balancer. So I grabbed a new WP from NAPA and began the R&R.

Now my problem is, the (2) LONG BOLTS THAT GO THROUGH THE WATER JACKET DO NOT WANT TO THREAD IN!  :swear: I have read somewhere there should be some compound added to the threads and locktite etc. Any advice?

There is probably a combination of sealant & rust in the threads deep in the hole.... Ideally you could use a long reach tap to chase the threads but 6" long taps are spendy ($60+) so I'd probably take a regular long bolt, do a hacksaw slice & use that to chase the threads...

Thanks 1wild r/t. After a few Hail Mary's and an Our Father I managed to get both long bolts to thread. I did take the (4) long bolts out and clean them up the threads with my tap/dye 3/4.

Just trying to find torque specs on the WP.......I thing they're 30-35ft/lbs?  :clueless:

Thanks again.

30-35 is good, considering the issues you had with threads I'd err to the low side just to be safe....

Is there some sort of thread sealer/dope that needs to be on the bolts that go through the water jackets? Of course I have a major leak coming from that bolt head that was giving me issues.  :banghead:

Yes, as the bolts go into the water jacket.

the white pipe thread dope is really good. Used on my header bolts.

You need sealant on the long bolts Liquid teflon pipe sealer works great or teflon tape with sealer , not sure why the bolts wlll not start though , lean the threads & test the bolts check for damage due to corrosion on the threads
