70 RT/SE 383 4 speed
« on: February 17, 2016 - 04:23:15 PM »
Some of you might remember when we went up to Indiana and bought this car last year. Well it's been sitting here since then, I've had it for sale ( flipper   :misbehaving: )  and had some interest, but no sale. But deep down I really wanted to build the car. It's just such a perfect body to start with, I can't help but touch it everytime I walk by it. It's like a beautiful woman.

One of the stumbling blocks on restorations is the cost of a quality paint job. I have friends that are professional painters, do beautiful work ,that have looked at the car at length and said it's a perfect example. But they work for someone else. And then Monday Tom came by. Haven't seen him for quite awhile. The cars I've seen him paint in the past were beyond show quality. And he says he's bored   :thinkerg:  So I said, look at this car. Well he spent a solid hour inspecting the car, from every possible angle.

So needless to say we made a deal and she's going to paint.  :woohoo:  So were up in the air about color. Born Hemi Orange so might stay with that or paint her the same color as Toxic's car, which is very close to EV2.

Anyway here is what she looks like now, I'll continue collecting parts and restoring sub assemblies as we go along.   Stay tuned.

Gotta ask, hows the headliner? do you have all the special trim?  Cause making it a regular R/T is gonna be allot easier if your missing parts...

We have no headliner, and missing much of the special trim. But we do have several other SE parts. But your right, we don't have the matching motor, just a 383 HP date code and the matching 4 speed. So she will be reborn an RT.   :2thumbs:

I'll be selling the SE stuff we have when I get it all sorted out.   :rebel:

Thanks man, we were blessed to get such an awesome car to build. Tom asked me if I have anything with the original paint still on it to match. Well, I dug out the mirrors today, never repainted. I put a little wax on one and compared it to Toxics car.  Just a little darker but darn close. Either way she will be orange.   :woo:

That is like a beautiful blank canvas Mark.  Can't wait to follow this one as she comes together.

I saw when this car went up for sale and was giving it some serious consideration as it was a steal at the price it originally sold for.

It's your car and of course your choice what to do with it, and I'm glad to see you keeping it now instead of flipping it, but I would seriously consider leaving it as an R/T SE. Especially since it's a 4-speed, one of only about 400 or so? And in a desirable high-impact color.

The headliner board is reproduced now, (DAYCLONA), as is the SE front valance trim. The rest of the SE stuff is not that tough to track down even these days, of course prices are high on some things.

I have almost the same car, only mine is a lowly automatic and has stuff like a/c and cruise control. I had to track down a lot of these parts myself over the years, but was lucky to pick up an entire '70 318 SE parts car for $600 bucks (ah the good ol' days).

I still have a bunch of extra parts which I am in the process of gradually selling, if you need anything just put up a wanted ad or contact me directly. Will be following along on this build with interest though either way.

Thanks for the tip on the headliner board.  We talked about it today and will , if at all possible keep it RT/SE.  Will send you a PM on parts I need.

Orange is one of the best color on an ebody IMO.  Might consider cutting all the holes in the replacement trunk pan for your fuel filler, vent, shock tower access, ect.  Much easier now then after paint.    Good luck!
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Spent the last 3 days cutting the holes, cleaning the entire belly and all seam sealing. This car really amazes me in that the floors, frames rails and rockers pinch welds are all original, and dang near perfect. No dents, bends or distortion. Tomorrow I have to tape and paper off and paint the belly with truck bed liner. Then off to paint on Saturday. I'll post before and after belly pics tomorrow.    :rebel:
