How to wire a brake switch to work as a clutch safety switch
« on: February 26, 2016 - 09:52:19 AM »
Can anyone tell me how to wire a brake switch to work as a clutch safety switch? Also, does anyone have a picture of which way the brake switch wires  connect to the brake pedal?

There is a two prong connector so it's pretty hard to get the brake switch screwed up.

As for the CSS, either you disable it by grounding the post on the relay or get a CSS.

sure you could wire something up but I would have to ask why? Sit in car, depress clutch, put trans in neutral, start the car...

I'm not a big fan of grounding the CSS on the relay but I didn't want to spend the $$ on a working OEM clutch safety switch.  To fix this I made my own CSS with a mirco switch and a homemade bracket.

The micro switch looks something like this, I used the normally open tab and wired that to the starter relay:

I read somewhere in a previous post about it being unsafe not to have a CSS. I know that this may be a dumb question how do you ground the starter relay? I'm not to swift when it comes to electrical. I want to start her up this weekend and this is the only electrical issue that I have left.

Connect a wire from the CSS/NSS post of the starter relay to a ground (negative terminal of battery, engine block, or frame/body)

if you connect the yellow wire off the start solinoid through a brake light switch to ground & have the brake light switch held open when the pedal is at the top as soon as you depress the pedal it will connect meaning that you an start the ar in gear but at least it has to be a consious effort to depress the pedal before the car will start so you can kick it into neutral or fully depress the pedal  the brake light switch could be as cheap as $2 ^ just make a small bracket to hold it off the brake light bracket

Or make abracket that holds the micr switch in a position where it gets activated at the bottom of clutch pedal travel.  N.O  contacts closing at full travel providing the ground cct for the relay.

Yeah, let me find one.  I tried to K.I.S.S. - made a L bracket and attached the switch to that.  I had a long arm switch on hand and bent the arm over to a position that worked.  Since I have manual brakes, I used to power brake lever pivot hole as the bracket mounting point.  If I had power brakes, I would have used the lower left MC bolt (looking at the inside firewall) as a mounting point - may need a slightly longer bolt for this.
