She's back home - for good now! PICS ADDED!
« on: June 07, 2005 - 10:32:48 PM »
Figured I'd post a little update on the body shop and what not.... here's basically how yesterday went.... :gripe:

Picked dad up at 9:30ish...

Arrived at bodyshop around 10:45...

Glass guys were scheduled for 8, they had called and said they would be there between 9 & 10...

Still hadn't shown when upon arrival... had called again saying it would be after lunch (12:30-1ish)...

Ate lunch from 11-12... headed back to shop at 12...

12:30.... 1:00.... 1:30.... 2:00....

Finally, they arrived at 2:30.... it only took them maybe 20 minutes to install the glass and trim...

Talked with the guys real quick, then fired up the 'Cuda and headed for home....

You think the day could get any worse.... KEEP READING!

3:00... we're on the road but have to get a full tank of gas first (follow a cop into the station... check!)

10-15 miles down the road... the temp gauge is starting to read warm, keeping an eye on that...

5 more miles we're cooking at 210*... pull over and cool down...

10 minutes later, check temp and fire back up running just below 190*... back on the road....

Repeat this THREE more times!!

Highest temp recorded was 240*... so far, nothing appears broken or hurt, but time will tell... (mental note: order new radiator and electric fan - also, get rid of rubber fuel line under hood, vapor lock sucks!)

6:00 and about 60 miles later... metal on metal crunching noise (first thought, brake pad hanging, but noise continues)...

Pull over immediately and search front end of car... nothing visible... pull out jack from daily driver car and jack 'Cuda up, pull front passenger tire off (remembering tools on a 75 mile shake down run is a GOOD idea!)

Kick rear tire as hard as possible to the point of almost breaking a toe.... :eeksmall:

Look around and realize bolts holding hub to rotor have wiggled loose... :eekbig: :eekbig: :eekbig: ... realize no torx bits on hand... proceed to finger tighten them and hope they'll stay for the next 7 miles to a Meijer....

First, tighten upper control arm nuts that have also wiggled loose causing sudden oval track camber... :eekbig: :eeksmall:

Run into Meijer to find they only carry T30 torx (need T45) :gripe: :banghead: ... buy set of Allen keys and proceed to tighten bolts in parking lot of Meijer... (mental note - when instructions say to wire tie bolts... DO IT!! :banghead: :banghead: )

Head back on road and pray everything else stays together for the next 15 miles home....

Pull into driveway at 6:55 realizing it took almost 4 hours to drive 75 miles....

Add to whiteboard, MANY things to fix!

Wow, Mike!  Quite an adventurous afternoon!  We haven't driven our car over 5 miles yet...I'm a little nervous now.

Mike I'm not sure if I'm glad I wasn't there or not. Sounds like the saga continues but at least it's nothing major. Right?

I know I know... I gotta pull the front passenger brake assembly off and see exactly how much damage I did... hopefully it's just a slight groove on the backing plate... those with Wilwood's know what the black plate looks like... we shall see!! :madvibe: :banghead:

Last night I started working on fabbing my dash to make my stereo fit... so far so good... just gotta wire it now!!

I'll have pics tonight! :grinyes:

Glad you made it home, better now then on the way to Carlisle. I will be doing like I did last time and driving the first 100 miles or so within a few miles of home just in case something comes loose. Hopefully you have found and corrected all problems.

Sound like you were careful enough not to do any real damage.  Man, I get the weird feeling in my gut the first time out.  A 75 mile maiden trip is really ambitious!

My usual routine for test driving a newly-assembled car is to gradually make longer trips and double check everything before I go out the next time.  Takes a while to shake out all the bugs.   :driving:

The tough luck storys really suck man. When i bought my car it took me 3 years to finally get all the bugs out of it, to make it the reliable driver it is now. I also had lots of little things to deal with. :guitar: Keep at it Mike and be patient, because frustration can cause damage. I know this from experience.  :madvibe:
