Not sure what agreement you had with your body shop, however the vast majority of them are not doing restorations as we in the hobby think of it. They are there to get the outside of your car to look good, that is about where it stops. Most body shops have no clue or regard for what was done in the factory; if they did they would be a restoration shop (assuming the one you used was marketed as such). Not in anyway taking their side, but I have known many body shop guys over the years and their bread and butter is collision repair; in and out rapidly. Painting a old muscle car is labor intensive and costly, especially to do it right. I can imagine how much it cost you, but most of those shops don't necessarily like doing them because typically the owner expects the car to come back looking like the day it was born, however normal paint and body is more about panel replacement and blending in the color and out the door.
