Neutral safety switch
« on: March 02, 2016 - 02:06:18 PM »
I recently swapped out my wiring with the aaw full system.  Long process, very time consuming.  Anyway, I cannot get the starter to turn over without grounding the relay where you would plug the nss into.  My reverse lights aren't working neither. I checked for continuity to the 12v wire from plug to firewall, reverse light from plug to firewall, and ground wire from plug to relay.  All have continuity.  If I unplug ground wire from relay and ground straight from relay to ground, all good.  Is there something else I should be looking at?  Appreciate your help.

If the NSS plug comes loose from the side of the transmission, the car will not crank. Since BOTH the starter and the reverse lights don't work, it most likely has to be the plug.

Get underneath the car and verify that the transmission is in park or neutral first.

While you're there do what was said and make sure the NSS is in all the way.  This would cause it not to ground.

If none of that works, another possibility is the rooster comb on the valve body of the transmission does not match up with the NSS you're using on the transmission.  There were different styles if I remember correctly for 1 and 3 wire switches.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up going down to the parts store and picking up a new nss. The center plastic piece was pretty weak in my old one and didn't protrude out as far as the new one, maybe only a few mm, but noticeable. Put the new one in, and it cranks right over.  Hopefully soon, be able to get it back on the road.

HP_Cuda, if you're talking about the clutch safety switch check this thread out

If you don't need OEM, I made a CSS from a micro switch and a home made bracket, total was about $5.

My point being is

a) they are not cheap
b) cannot be bought at a part store

If I were to do this I would want to go the OEM route.

Roger that.  I would have liked an OEM one too but they are tough to find decently priced and in good condition.
