1970 to 74 grill differences

All you wise people out there might have some ideas about the changes made to the grills of Cudas.
I was wondering why, when it appears that most people prefer the appearance of the 1971 Cuda grill ( :ack: ) over the 1970 ( :grinyes:), did the factory change back to the 1970 style of grill (and other design treatments)?
It would seem that with all the tooling etc set up for the 71 look a change back would not make much $$$$ sense.
Any speculation?  Am I missing something?

Everybody likes the 71 grille over the 70 TODAY...and i think thats a stretch saying that's even true today to begin with, but back in 1971, most people liked the 70's cleaner look over the 71. I myself thought the 70's were a nicer car....the fish gilled fenders, quad headlites and Biilboard stripes were a little "over the top" IMO. But I bought my first 71 cuda in 1998 and the car really grew on me. If you look at the sales stats, the 70 Barracudas outsold the 71's by over 3 to1.

The reason the 71's are more $$ today is production numbers and that over the top styling, the exact reasons that back in 71 they did not sell as well as the 70 model. Goes to show how time changes our perspective on things!

Back in that time period, people expected a car to change year to year, it was just part of the game. As Chrysler saw the writing on the wall for musclecars, they reduced the $$ spent on the E-bodies as they knew they were going to phase them out. So the 72-74 cars go almost unchanged except for Federal mandated 5MPH bumpers and stripe kits and other such minor changes.

The '70 and '72-74 Barracuda's have a front end that looks similar to a Duster. The '71 was one in its own, with quad headlights, stouter profile, and of course, the gill slots. I myself prefer the '72 - '74 grille over the '70.

For Challengers, it is a whole different playfield. I like the '70 for the front/tail, while some prefer the raised curves of the '71 Challenger's.

I'd take a '70 Challenger R/T six pack and a '71 Cuda AAR 4-speed and call it a night.  :grinyes:

Don't forget that the 70 cuda grill takes a special valance to hold it in place.  71-74 valance was the same.
