383's, whats the difference ???

     OK, so in 1970 there were two 4V 383's, one with 330 horse, and the HP 335 horse. So what was different about them. From what I can find cr was the same. Was it cam profiles ?. Different heads. ?   Cast crank vs. steel crank. ?  Were HP motors painted orange, and 330 motors painted blue ?   :clueless:   

   Reason I ask  :bigsmile: is I have a line on getting a 70 date code complete 383 with a cast correct 4V intake . In original blue paint. Will all the parts from this motor work to build my 70 date code 383 HP block.  ???  My motor has block, main caps, steel crank, heads with red valve springs, HP exhaust manifolds.

I'm sure the color of the paint is good for 5 hp.  Way more impact than stripes.

you can save weight by putting on the paint more thinly

Do you have the casting number to the intake? should be 2951666
If it is a 383-4 a Holley 4160 is shown.
If a 383 LP  it shows a Carter AVS. I believe my Carter had different size primary and secondary.
Was it original air conditioned?

The 383-2 and the 383-4 (330hp) both shared the same cam & head assembly. the 383-4(335 hp) use the 440 cam & head assembly.  Both 383-4's used the same carb specs, whether it was a Holley or a Carter; the only difference is for auto/manual trans or a/c vs non a/c.

Cam Spec's [Std versus HP]:
Intake Open (BTC): 18 deg versus 21 deg
Intake Close (ABC): 58 deg versus 67 deg
Intake Duration: 256 deg versus 268 deg
Exhaust Open: (BBC): 66 deg versus 79 deg
Exhaust Close (ATC): 14 deg versus 25 deg
Exhaust Duration: 260 deg versus 284 deg
Lift: 0.425 versus 0.450
All of the piston specs, etc are the same between the two. However, the spring rates were different on the Magnum Heads:

I've had my 70 Roadrunner since 74 and for as long as I can remember my understanding was the 335 HP version had the Holley and the 330 HP version came with the small carter AVS.  Mine came with the Carter which always bugged me because I wanted those 5 HP!  Pretty sure I got the info from a MOTOR manual that covered that year.

            Thank you Matt.   :worshippy   Good info, especially cam specs. Even though it will get a clean up bore, I want it as stock as possible, both performance and appearance wise.   :rebel:
