Mopar Muscle getting too dear?
« on: March 07, 2016 - 10:24:00 PM »
Long time subscriber here, usually three years at a time.

Anyone else finding that MM's renewal cost is getting too high?  They were sold a while back and replaced Randy.

Or anyone find a cheaper way to renew?

I'm ok with price, but quality seems lacking.
Seems like articles are more generic and not as focused.
They have the Car Craft crew writing Mopar stuff and it shows.

Sure hope Ebooger doesn't quit anytime soon or we'll have nothing when Mopar Action tanks.

I spoke to these guys at the National's, they seemed pretty positive overall. I subscribe to all of the Mopar mags and have to say I am not overly happy with any one of them. MM is probably better from a tech prospective which I like, although I find they tend to be a little drag racing focused which is cool if you are a drag racer. MA is fair but I really hate their attempt at humor; whoever writes for them really needs to take some classes in writing. Abut 3/4 of the time you can skip almost the entire first page of an article to get right to something interesting. MCG has just changed their format which is interesting. I cannot say whether I like it or not yet, the ads were ok, however I think their coverage of feature cars is better than the other 2. I met Rob Wolf at SEMA a few years ago, seems like an ok guy.

I also have been a very long term subscriber to MM, MA and MCG.   I'm increasingly upset and very disappointed, in particular with MM, as they -- MM the most -- include advertisements and pics of non-Mopar ... they include Chevy and Ford... MM OBVIOUSLY IS NOT, NOT, NOT A PURE MOPAR MAGAZINE FOR THE TRUE AND DIE-HARD MOPAR READERS -- they've never heard of "MOPAR OR NO CAR", SO, THEY DON'T SPEAK OUR LANGUAGE!  The last issue I recvd.. I was so mad that I ripped the pages out of the magazine with Chevy and Ford stuff... I DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR ANYTHING EXCEPT 100% MOPAR WITHIN MY READING.  My subscription has recently ended with MM (last issue).. and I'm torn with NOT renewing it.. especially since they continue to include Chevy and Ford ads.

On top of all that, have you ever carefully read MM or MA? The spelling and syntax are 6th grade stuff and it cheapens the effort when it seems it's written by someone who either doesn't give a rat's azz (sic) or know any better. Don't complain about the price down there- it's $8.00 a copy here.  :screwy:

the ads are dropping because the rates are high. I dropped my ad because of 2 reasons, 1 rates are stupid, 2 donate a 6.4 engine for a build mm 3 years ago and the car still is not done, in exchange for editorials and plugs. But they squandered that.

they are solely focused on driving consumers to the website. When you subscribe to Hotrod on the digital side you get access to the other online magazines as well. most true car guys that I know want paper, not digital.

It seems to be an issue of "business v. hobby" in that the people who own the magazines are focused on the business side and subsequently hire other business types who generally know little of the hobby. The hobby people associated with the mag either capitulate or move on/out. In the case of MA, it would seem they hired a 9 yo to do their writing (or perhaps an aspiring novelist). As I am sure most of you agree, there is no "one" magazine that features everything from feature cars to "how to" stuff. Seems each is focused on one or 2 areas only which I am sure is a product of space and time as well as editor interests. What many people do not understand is that magazines make money from advertisers not subscriptions/readers, however you don't get advertisers if no one reads the mag; so there is this constant seesaw type affair going on between these two. Us readers don't like the mags all that much but there isn't much to choose from, so you have somewhat of a captured audience. Subsequently the magazines push the vendors to advertise to get in front of us readers, however advertising space takes up editorial space and therefore the editor has to decide what to print. Given the very diverse nature of this hobby, it is exceptionally difficult to attend to the needs of the many as no matter what you do there will always be someone who isn't happy. I personally would rather see articles on restomods, garage builds, etc whereas another side of the hobby wants to see full accurate restorations and another full on drag cars, then you have the newer less experienced people who want do it yourself articles. All that said, I can put up with a lot except very poor written articles (MA) and wasting 1/2 or even a full page on irrelevant crap (like the article written from the car's point of view). Once in a while might be funny, but every issue sucks.

I like most of the articles from any Mopar magazine... I just don't like to see pics of GM and Ford cars within the magazine... just look at how MM is including them... their latest issue includes a 1/2 page of Cougar... and they promote HOTROD, CARCRAFT, MOTOTREND... and include a Chevy insignia... and a Camero in one ad... MM is a MOPAR magazine, yet their publishers/owners include ads/pictures for other brands ... Chevy/Ford... this should be taboo!  It is supposed to be MOPAR OR NO CAR!
