Have power but no start
« on: March 11, 2016 - 09:38:21 AM »
hey guys, this is a non Cuda issue.. I have a 91 Jeep Wagoneer. w/AMC 360. I need a little aid in troubleshooting

It doesnt start. I suspect either a bad starter, or ignition switch.

Brand new battery, I replaced the relay, all lights come on and all that jazz but when I turn the key I get nothing. Just dead, not even an attempt to start or make noise.

If i cross the terminals on the starter it should turn over right? If it does it's probably the switch, if not the starter or other wiring???

Where should i start in trouble shooting this?

So now I go outside and it starts. Just like that, no issues. would the switch be doing this or suspect a loose wire somewhere?

This has happened before where it wouldnt start and then wait 10-15min and it magically works again.

Sounds like a bad ground or connection somewhere.  If the starter is going bad, you should be able to hear it before it finally goes.

could be  Crank or cam sensor too , have you tried turning the key on & off 3 times without starting it & reading the P codes ?

Seems to be a simple enough system..  If it does not even crank & the next time it cranks/starts/runs fine I'd suspect loose or deteriorated battery cables (green death)  or perhaps something to do with the safety interlock that makes sure the tranny is in park/neutral

That was another thought was a N safety switch. That's what it acts like.

appears the 91 Wagoneer uses a similar if not identical NSS as my 73 Challenger.. three prong connector can go bad and not make good contact, switch fatigue or out of adjustment gear selector, not to mention internal wear of the part that engages the NSS..
When in Park or neutral the switch provides ground to the starter relay on the old mopars so I'd guess it does the same

same connector as the old mopes

one relay offered even looks like the relays used back in the 70s

Thanks Bullitt,

great information, I swapped the relay, but its highly likely the N switch is an issue. Ill replace them too. The follow wires for loose or bad connections

You can jump the ground wire that goes to the relay to the body to check.. This eliminates the NSS & wiring from the equation.
