Why I am Going With Manifolds

I am pulling out my crusty old headers and installing magnum manifolds this winter.

Here is the major reason why...





TICK TICK TICK TICK!!!

I know better headers would likely seal better...but I just don't have the funds for TTIs or ????

That and this car is a cruiser and will not likely see a track any time soon...so the best solution seems to be manifolds.

I am hopeful that is the last I will heard of the dreaded tick!!!

I have Hi-Po manifolds on my Cuda and headers on my Charger.  I can tell you that it is way easier to work on the Cuda.  For example, my starter went out on the Cuda a couple of weeks ago.  Swapped out a new starter in under an hour on my back in the garage.  If that was the Charger, it would have been a much longer project.  I am planning to install a new Steer N Gear Stage III box on the Charger in a couple weeks and am planning to take most of the day.

That's why when it comes time I will be doing shorty headers on my 340. A lot easier to work with

This can be addressed with some work on the weld bead around the port on the headers. I've noticed that this area, especially in cheap headers, needs some work. Widening, flattening, and equalizing the ports between them all goes a long way towards creating better sealing surfaces. Weld em up, grind them smooth, take some time to  make them level, then cut the  band between all the ports to allow each  tube to move independently of the others.

Yeah I know....but I don't have a welder...so there is that... and the headers are well let me see, I bought the car in 91, and they were on the car then, so more than 26 years old, and they did not look new when I got them, so they are pretty  beat up and just not worth the time.

That and the space issues.

High temp orange silicon would have sealed that right up. Do it all the time and never have come backs.
Its just a little 340 with a miss

after both gaskets blew one on each side and I broke two rear exhaust studs one on each head.
I removed the heads and had the exhaust manifolds planed .   
Fit like a glove used copper aerosol spray on gaskets.......

I think this is an area very few of us ever check for flatness, on either  the heads, manifolds, or headers. A little work here nets much longer term improvement.

Anyone running 400 HP thru stock 1972-74 exhaust manifolds?
