alt or regulator?
« on: March 14, 2016 - 08:12:31 PM »
hello group! seeking opinions: the other day upon starting the engine, screeching noise came from the belt around the alternator. I checked the belt tension.. it seemed fine. the more rpm, the more screech... at the same time this is happening, the alt gauge reads overcharging; by alot. after a few minutes, the screeching went away and the gauge returned to normal. thought all was well until it happened again a few days later. my question is: if it was just a loose belt, why would the alt gauge show overcharging only while this is happening? I was thinking maybe it's the voltage regulator, but a friend thinks that since the alt/belt is screeching, it's the alternator... and if it was the regulator, why would there be screeching noise?  I took off the belt to feel for any play on the alt shaft, it was good... as I spin it by hand, the bearings sound good with no resistance or "grinding" feel. I didnt want to mention this until after, but none of this started happening until after I gave someone a jump... we had jumper cables connected correctly... my initial sense is that the jump had nothing to do with it and is only a coincidence... any opinions?

Id put a volt gauge on to see what it is charging. If the reg. is shorted the Alt will put out around 16 volts and cook the battery and possibly everything else.

I would replace the alternator and the voltage regulator at the same time. I have had the pleasure of replacing one and then deciding it was the other, then did that only to find out in the process I damaged the first one in the process. This is more prevalent if you replace the VR, then figure out it is the Alt, but just saying.

the belt is screeching due to max load on the alt , this stops when the load is reduced .
the regulator is cheap so I would replace that first , if the alt is the problem it is often a bad diode but this would never be intermittent but you can have the alt tested .
